The Canadian show jumping team is lucky to have some amazing long-time FEI grooms to care for their horses as they travel the world:

Stefanie Walchuk (SW) – grooms Emerson for Mario Deslauriers
Clémence Rességuier (CR) – grooms Nikka vd Bisschop for Erynn Ballard
Danny Ingratta (DI) grooms Truman for Amy Millar
Caroline Holmberg (CH) grooms Figor for Tiffany Foster

1) What has been the highlight (so far) of these Olympics?

SW – The atmosphere in the ring, and the crowd has been incredible. We missed out on the team final but just getting to watch it and experience that was very cool. And seeing Snoop Dogg!

CR – The view from the ring.

DI – Just being here with the best from all nations and equestrian sport is pretty awesome.

CH – Just experiencing the atmosphere of the Olympics Games is something special and of course seeing Snoop Dogg in a dressage outfit. 😊

2) What is your favourite horse show to work at?

SW – I think Dinard [France] has been one of my favourite shows so far. It’s beautiful and close to the beach. In terms of grooms amenities and stabling, Riesenbeck [Germany] was great! (When it’s sunny out)

CR – La Baule [France].

DI – I’ve been to some great shows and venues. My top three are Wesley Clover Parks (Ottawa), Spruce Meadows, specifically The Masters (Calgary), and The Royal Winter Fair (Toronto).

CH – I would have to say Aachen, Germany.

3) What is your horse like in the barn?

SW – He’s very sweet and loves any kind of attention, he’s very needy and wants you to pay constant attention to him.

CR – Looking for food 24/7.

DI – Baby shark

CH – He is very sweet and kind but does not like being alone so needs some emotional support from time to time!

4) What barn quirks does your horse have?

SW – He’s absolutely loves cookies, when you give him any treats he will lick his lips and make slobbery foam. I think he’s just trying to make the taste last longer. It’s quite funny.

CR – She loves cheesy pizza.

DI – Baby shark.

CH – He loves standing with the wind from the fan blowing in his face when it’s hot out and he knows to pee on command. 😄

5) What advice would you give to a novice groom aspiring to work at this level?

SW – The best way to learn is to watch others and ask lots of questions.

CR – Do it because you really love horses. You are not going to see your family or friends as much as you want, but if you really like horses you will not regret anything.

DI – Be observant, ask questions, and surround yourself with an amazing team!

CH – Be humble and always willing to learn and never be afraid to ask questions! The best way to learn things is to ask your fellow grooms.

6) What has been your favourite meal in France?

SW – We haven’t made it outside of the grooms’ village for food yet, but you can never go wrong with a good cheese board.

CR – Margret de canard [duck breast].

DI – CHEESE

CH – All the cheese! 🧀
