The 113th edition of CSIO Barcelona is officially underway. Spain’s oldest international sporting event kicked off with German, French, and Spanish victories on the opening day of competition at the Olympic arena of the Real Club de Polo de Barcelona.
The highlight of the day was the RCPB Cup, a Table A against the clock, where reigning European champion Richard Vogel delivered a commanding performance. The German rider was the last to enter the ring and the fastest to complete the course without penalties. Riding Gangster Montdesir, Vogel crossed the finish line in 69.57 seconds, edging out fellow German Sandra Auffarth on Comcador ODLby just twelve hundredths of a second. Italian rider Giulia Martinengo Marquet took third with Coynor, clocking in at 70.02 seconds. Spain’s Carlos Bosch finished fourth, the top national rider of the day, aboard Jolie van der Berghoeve Kar.
The competition began earlier in the day with the Estrella Damm Trophy, a special two-phase class won by France’s Megane Moisonnier. Riding Kandoo Z, she posted the fastest clear round in the second phase with a time of 36.53 seconds. Madrid’s Juan Riva Gil (Fernhill Balou Beau) followed closely behind, just a tenth of a second slower, while Irish rider Michael Pender took third on Madgeslane Louis with a time of 37.33 seconds.
The day concluded with the Fuze Tea Trophy, also run as a special two-phase class. Galicia’s Esther Modroño delivered the winning ride on Quibus van de Klothoef, finishing the second phase clear in 34.73 seconds. RC Polo’s Álvaro Zambrano came in second aboard Tikal DZ (36.26 seconds), while France’s Marie Agathe Reznikoff was third on Cesario de Kreisker with a time of 38.73 seconds.
The second day of CSIO Barcelona kicks off tomorrow, Friday, with the Negrita Cup at 11:00 a.m., followed by the La Vanguardia Trophy at 2:00 p.m. The main event of the day, the City of Barcelona Grand Prix, will begin at 8:00 p.m., featuring a top-tier international lineup. The evening will also include the traditional gala dinner in the Main Tribune of the Real Club de Polo de Barcelona, followed by a performance from Córdoba Ecuestre.
