The Canadian Farm Builders Association (CFBA) recently held its 2022 Builder Awards competition and ceremony in Stratford, Ont. Entries were received in 10 categories and the submissions were assessed by attendees at the CFBA’s annual conference, which was held the same day. Winners were selected via a people’s choice voting format.

The Project of the Year Award determined the best entry across all categories. HFH Inc. took home the top spot for a 19-stall, 36,000 sq.ft. equestrian facility, JohnMel Stables Inc., located at Deerfield Manor in Puslinch, Ontario, owned by Melanie and John Ryan. Designed by HFH Inc. and engineered by DesignLogix Engineering, CFBA member suppliers included Agway Metals, Mar-Span, System Equine and Lil’ Country Woodshop.

Key features of the building include over 2,800 sq. ft. of wraparound timber porches; 19 custom-designed stalls with dutch doors to the outside; a spacious office; two large tack rooms for two equine businesses on the property, horse boarding and trail riding. Aisles are heated rubberized brick; two grooming stalls, two wash stalls, a blanket room and laundry facilities. There are two viewing areas, “The Side Saddle Kitchen Lounge” with a full kitchen, fireplace and viewing area and the “Five O’ Clock Fox”, a sports lounge with a pool table and TV.

The Horse I Award was presented to HFH Inc. for a 14,000-square-foot stallion breeding barn designed for race horses. The building includes a wash stall and teaser stall with an opening window between stalls; four custom-designed stalls with heavy gauge steel, extra tall and solid block walls; a lab room for testing, medicine and files storage; and boiler for the in-floor heating system. It was engineered by DesignLogix Engineering Inc.

HFH Inc. also won the Horse II Award for the same facility that won project of the year, JohnMel Stables.
