According to a report in the Toronto Star Toronto Police Services are requesting $7.5 million over three years to upgrade their Mounted Unit’s facilities at the Horse Palace at Exhibition Place, home of their 21 horses.
The Mounted Unit, which celebrated their 140th anniversary on January 26, is looking to increase stall size for their current equine members, most of which are large draft breeds or draft crosses. While some critics of the unit point to the expense and safety concerns, police horses have long been seen as an effective means of crowd control during protests and special events, such as last summer’s World Series games, for search-and-rescue situations, and a unique and positive means to connect with the community.
The police’s total proposed 2026 operating budget is about $1.43 billion; last year, the city spent in excess of $450,000 to upgrade the Horse Palace riding ring footing, an area also used by the resident riding school. It is estimated that for 2026, operating costs for the mounted unit consisting of the 21 horses, 39 officers and two civilians would be about $6.9 million. The canine unit building is also seeking about $4.9 million for upgrades.
