Colic surgery could not stop Angela Covert and Utan, a 16-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, from continuing to collect victories in the show ring. The pair started out the weekend May 18-21 at Fox Lea Farm Spring Concours II in Venice, Florida by placing second in the $5,000 Welcome Stake, right behind Covert’s 11-year-old German-bred mare, Billie Jean. Both horses were ridden to double clear rounds.

The following day in the $25,000 Grand Prix, Covert rode Utan to an exciting win – A first place finish in the gelding’s second time back in the Grand Prix ring after colic surgery.

“We took much longer than even the surgeon suggested to bring Utan back to jumping and competing,” Covert said. “As hopeful as I was, I didn’t feel there was any pressure or expectation to have him return to the Grand Prix ring – He had already done so much for me and my career.”
