With three third-places finishes for Canada on the second day of the 2018 Adequan/FEI North American Youth Championships (NAYC) presented by Gotham North, three was the magic number on Aug. 2 in North Salem, NY.
Bronze Medal for Canada Central in the Dressage Junior Rider Team Championship
Bringing home the bronze medal in the Dressage Junior Rider Team Championship was Team Canada Central. Teammates, Jade Buchanan of Newmarket, ON, Kiara Williams-Brown of Navan, ON, Anna Swackhammer of Rockwood, ON, and Brooke Mancusi of Winnipeg, MB came together to earn a final score of 199.151.
The gold medal was awarded to US Region 3 (202.787), while US Region 4 captured silver (199.362).
Mancusi earned the distinction of being the top Canadian rider, showing her 10-year-old Westphalian gelding, Wellknown (Wynton x Havidoff), to a score of 67.273% for seventh place. Top honours went to Jori Dupell of US Region 6, who scored 68.727% aboard Fiderprinz.
“I’ve only had Wellknown for about six months, so it was a great experience,” said Mancusi. “It took a whole village to help me get where I am, and it was really fun standing on the podium with everyone, knowing how hard we worked in order to accomplish this goal. It felt nice to be the top Canadian rider, but it was really nice to know we helped the team.”
Mancusi and her teammates endured the increasing heat, both from stiff competition and the muggy weather, to ultimately hold on to their bronze medal position.
“All of our riders did really well,” said David Ziegler of Beiseker, AB, Chef d’Équipe for Canada Central. “They each put in great tests. I’ve been really happy with how they have been schooling through the last week, so I couldn’t have pushed for it to go any better. The Juniors have been really good at supporting each other today and worked really well as a team.”
Following Mancusi in eighth place was Chase Robertson of Calgary, AB, who competed as an individual. She danced her way to a score of 66.970% with Teresa van Lambalgen’s 15-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, Winsome (Obelisk x Wolfgang).
Canada East placed a respectable sixth in the team rankings on a score of 193.074, earned by team members, Lily-Rose Lemaire of Drummondville, QC, Gabrielle Bouchard of Quebec City, QC, Ariel Boesener of Canning, NS, and Molly Gunyon of Hudson, QC.
Third Place for Eric Krawitt in Jumping Children’s Individual Qualifier
NAYC Jumping 2018 began with the Children’s Individual Qualifier, in which athletes from Canada, the United States and Mexico battled it out for the top spot in a nail-biter finish. Eric Krawitt of Okotoks, AB pushed hard to stop the clock in 64.20 seconds riding Wellington, a nine-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by A.E.S. Equestrian, Inc. The duo’s clear round earned them a third-place finish. Mia Albelo of US Zone 4 claimed the win on a time of 59.17 seconds aboard Cassandra Dreams.
Olivia Stephenson of Calgary, AB joined Krawitt in the top 10. She rode a clear round on Tomboy Farms’ 11-year-old Oldenburg mare, Chaccana (Chacco Blue x Kannan), for seventh place in a time of 67.65 seconds.
Sabrina Lefebvre Claims Third in First Jumping Young Riders Individual Competition
The final third-place finish of the day went to Sabrina Lefebvre of Terrebonne, QC in the first Jumping Young Riders Individual Competition of NAYC 2018. She and her 11-year-old Zangersheide mare, Alaska (Asca Z x Concorde), powered through a clear round in 63.51 seconds to earn their spot on the leaderboard. Claudia Villamil of Puerto Rico and Quite Close vd Smis earned the win with the lightning quick time of 58.78 seconds.
