Tanya Strasser-Shostak Earns Brosda Olympic Bursary for 2019

Equestrian Canada (EC) and the Brosda family are pleased to announce Tanya Strasser-Shostak of Saint-Adèle, QC, as the recipient of the $10,000 Brosda Olympic Bursary for 2019.

“Our daughter, Élisabeth Brosda, became passionate at a very young age and her greatest passion was always horses,” said Marie-France Maisonneuve, Élisabeth’s mother. “After enjoying different disciplines, she began to focus on dressage in 2011. My daughter’s only goal was to reach the Grand Prix level and represent Canada at the 2024 Olympic Games. And then came September 17, 2016… All of a sudden Élisabeth’s life ended after a tragic car collision when she was heading to an equestrian competition.”

Maisonneuve continued, “Élisabeth has always been an example of determination for us. Therefore, we knew we had to continue Élisabeth’s dream. With the unique support of Equestrian Canada and the Horsepower Foundation, we created the Élisabeth Brosda Memorial Fund with the objective of raising $100,000 in order to give annual bursaries that will support NextGen dressage athletes who share the dreams and goal Élisabeth embodied to represent the Canadian Dressage Team at the 2020 and/or 2024 Olympic Games.”

Strasser-Shostak’s application to the 2019 Bursary was centred around making her major games debut at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Criteria for the Bursary included reporting on international performance results for the previous 12 months, yearly training and competition plans showing proper progress to the Olympic Games, a detailed plan on how the Bursary funds would be used to support development and progression to the Olympic Games, and much more. In addition to meticulous planning, Strasser-Shostak works diligently with several top coaches to reach her goal: her mother and Canadian Olympian, Evi Strasser; four-time Canadian Olympian, Ashley Holzer; and British Olympian and renowned athlete, Charlotte Dujardin.

“I am extremely grateful to receive the Brosda Olympic Bursary,” said Strasser-Shostak. “I aim to represent this bursary to the fullest extent, as it is allowing me to continue pursuing my goals of representing Canada at future major games such as the Olympics, which was a goal of Élisabeth’s, as well. I plan to use this bursary for training and competition purposes in hopes of building up my abilities and competition results to best prepare me for future games. My goal for 2019 is to make the transition into the open Grand Prix following the Nations Cup in Wellington, FL, and, should things go as planned, aim for a spot on the 2020 Olympic team.”

Strasser-Shostak has been an immense asset to Canadian dressage since the early stages of her career, winning multiple medals at the North American Youth Championships (formerly the North American Junior and Young Riders Championships) and earning the title of 2013 EC Junior Equestrian of the Year. When she transitioned to the Under 25 (U25) Grand Prix level in 2016, Strasser-Shostak was awarded the inaugural Orion Cup for her potential to successfully represent Canada on the world stage. In 2017, she helped Team Canada 2 earn a bronze team medal at the inaugural CDIO-U25 FEI Nations Cup in Wellington, FL. Strasser-Shostak pushed herself even further the next year with a return to the U25 Nations Cup Wellington, as well as an extended trip to Europe, where she competed at some of the most prestigious and challenging venues in the Eastern Hemisphere.

As the successful candidate for 2019, Strasser-Shostak will be an ambassador for the Brosda Olympic Bursary, promoting the Olympic values of excellence, teamwork, leadership and fair play, and sharing her stories and experiences through public speaking engagements and on social media.

Strasser-Shostak said, “I aim to represent and educate people about this bursary in hopes of allowing it to grow so that it may continue being available to future Canadian team athletes, as well as representing and exemplifying Élisabeth and her dedication and passion for this sport. I hope that I may be able to represent this bursary and all of its values in the most positive ways, and cannot thank both Equestrian Canada and the Brosda family enough.”
