The FEI oversees around 70 rankings and standings across all the disciplines, from World Rankings calculated on a monthly basis for Athletes, Horses and/or combinations, to league, team and regional based standings for series such as the FEI World Cup™ and FEI Nations Cup™, as well as a variety of youth categories, among others.
Below is a snapshot of the main movers and shakers for the month of September 2023 in the senior World Rankings.
Jumping: Henrik von Eckermann Extends His Lead
There are few changes in the new Longines Rankings for the month of October, with nine athletes remaining in the top 10, Henrik von Eckermann (SWE) maintains his firm grip on the top spot with a commanding 3410 points. Julien Epalliard (FRA) remains in the second place he earned during the summer at the FEI Jumping European Championships in Milano (ITA) with 3178 points.
Ben Maher (GBR) keeps his progression from last month, when he climbed from ninth to fourth, and jumps into the top three with 3005 points. Martin Fuchs (SUI) climbs to fourth (2984 points) and overcomes country fellowman Steve Guerdat (SUI), who loses two positions with 2922 points.
Harrie Smolders (NED), Kent Farrington (USA) and McLain Ward exchange positions between 6th and 8th, while Max Kühner (AUT) and Simon Delestre round out the top 10 of the Longines Rankings.
Three Canadians improved their placings in September ‒ Tiffany Foster remains in the lead, moving up from 29th to 23rd place, followed by Erynn Ballard (61 to 55) and Mario Deslauriers (100 to 77).
Dressage: Jessica von Bredow Werndl and TSF Dalera BB’s Reign Continues
The accomplished German athlete retains her position at the top of the World Ranking for yet another month, with 2197 points. Meanwhile, Charlotte Fry (GBR) regains the second place lost a month ago with 2142 points and leaves the third position to Nanna Skodborg Merrald (DEN). The legendary figures of Charlotte Dujardin (GBR) and Isabell Werth (GER) exchange their positions and complete the top 5, occupying the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
While Jessica von Bredow-Werndl leads the athlete ranking, her mare TSF Dalera BB still dominating the Horses’ Ranking, accumulating 2197 points. Blue Hors Zepter (2093 points) closes the gap with the leader, while Glamourdale rounds out the top three once again, on 2060 points.
Canada’s top athletes remain unchanged from last month: Ryan Torkkeli (116), Jill Irving (142) and Naima Moreira Laliberte (171), and their horses sit 130th (Sternenwanderer), 196th (Genesis) and 190th (Stateman) .
Eventing: Oliver Townend New Leader
Rosalind Canter’s (GBR) reign at the top of the Eventing Ranking has lasted just one month. Her compatriot Oliver Townend is now leader, with 504 points, while Canter now occupies the second position with 467 points. Boyd Martin (USA) has made an impressive leap, surging five positions, from 8th to 3rd on 436 points.
Tim Price (NZL) drops from second to fourth on 434 points, while Tom McEwen (GBR) slips down one position to claim the fifth spot with 431 points.
For Canada, Jessica Phoenix made a huge leap up the standings last month, from 93rd to 51st. She is joined in the top 100 by Colleen Loach (73rd) and Karl Slezak (74th).
Driving (Four-in-Hand / Pairs / Singles): Top Unchanged
All three Driving rankings have the same leaders as last month: Kelly Houtappels-Bruder (CAN) remains at the top of the Singles discipline on 72 points, one month after unseating Mario Gandolfo (SUI). Meanwhile, Boyd Exell (AUS) and Martin Hölle (HUN) continue to maintain their strong leadership of the the Four-in-Hand and Pairs rankings, respectively.
Endurance: Theolissat consolidates her World Number 1 position
French athlete Melody Theolissat is, for the second consecutive month, the leader of the Endurance ranking with 1202 points. Her compatriot Julia Montagne chases the top spot closely with 1163 points. Gil Berenguer (ESP) is now third (997 points), followed by Nicolas Ballarin (FRA) and Constanza Laliscia (ITA).
There are only two Canadians in the top 200 on this list: Yvette Vinton (123rd) and Shannon Thorndyke (178th).
Para-Dressage Individual & Team: Rihards Snikus Stays at Top
Rihards Snikus (LAT) continues to reign at the top, a position he earned a few months ago, with 1678 points. Meanwhile, Sara Morganti (ITA) successfully holds on to second position on 1630 points, while Kate Shoemaker (USA) remains in third. In the Team Ranking, it’s the Netherlands who currently dominate the leaderboard with a total of 1327 points. Germany and the USA are tied on second position with 1313 points.
Top Canadian is Roberta Sheffield (33rd), followed by Laura Hall (130th) and Jody Schloss (166th).
