Canadian Eventing Team member and 2012 Olympian Michele Mueller, who took her mount Amistad to the four-star level and is currently developing Politically Correct, her seven-year-old Dutch warmblood/Thoroughbred cross, knows that it is not always easy to control a strong horse that loves to run. Here are her hints and exercises for developing speed control in your eventer.

“Before you even think of taking your horse out on a cross-country course, he has to be listening to you and responding to ‘whoa.’ Don’t take him out if he doesn’t listen and runs away with you.

It all starts with flatwork and that’s where you establish control and adjustability. You want to be able to move your horse up in the gallop and lengthen his stride, then bring him back to a shorter stride without losing balance or rhythm.
