“As a company we try to make horses as happy as possible so they perform as well as possible.” – John Da Silva

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ecogold Founder and President John Da Silva. He died peacefully on Monday October 28, 2019, after a recent diagnosis of Stage 4 cancer.

A textile engineer trained in Europe, John worked in high-tech fabrics since the early 1960s. With Ecogold, he embarked on a mission to modernize the equestrian industry and improve horses’ comfort, safety, and performance. He revolutionized the saddle pad with innovations like the Frictionless™ and Secure™ systems, and the CoolFit™ Intelligent Pad. He invented the now popular cross-country saddle pad shape, which reduced the surface covered by a pad to allow eventing horses to stay cooler.

“People started calling me with problems and I became like Dr. Phil of equestrian products,” John said with a laugh.

He was known for his patience, his sense of humour, his infectious smile, and his kind and generous spirit. Well loved by clients, suppliers, and employees alike, John supported not only top riders but also upcoming riders, local shows, amateur associations, silent auctions, and young rider teams. From the grassroots to the Olympics, to riders who need a helping hand, he was always there.

“Our customer isn’t really the rider, it is the horse,” John said.

He will be sorely missed by all. His daughter, Patricia Da Silva, will take the reins at Ecogold and will continue his legacy.

“He was an amazing man who touched so many lives. He was kind to everyone and took great pride in helping horses and improving their lives through his work at Ecogold,” said Patricia. “It’s a privilege for me to be able to pursue his life’s work.”

A celebration of John’s life will take place on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. at Kane & Fetterly Funeral Home in Montreal, Canada. You can send flowers and condolences at this link.
