It seems the Irish are not to be messed with this season at Spruce Meadows. After multiple strong showings last week to kick off the FEI tournaments at Spruce Meadows including a podium sweep, they had repeat performances Thursday in the Recon Metal Cup 1.55m during the ‘National’. Darragh Kenny (IRL) and Eddy Blue took top spot against a strong field of 40 other athletes, posting the fastest clear round in the jump-off over a course designed by German Olaf Petersen Jr. Close on Kenny’s heels were fellow countrymen David O’Brian riding El Balou OLD and Conor Swail with My Lady Lavista. Top Canadian in the class was Erynn Ballard aboard Dior, who placed 5th.

“It was a great class. Very fast jump-off,” said Kenny. “I absolutely love jumping in this ring. The footing is incredible. It’s always been a lucky ring for me, actually, I’ve always had good success in it. And my horse was brilliant. He’s in super form at the moment. He had a really uncharacteristic result in the Grand Prix last week [21 faults], but he bounced back and jumped super today.” When asked about his expectations for the upcoming RBC Grand Prix of Canada, presented by Rolex, Kenny said, “I expect a good result on Saturday.”
