Richard Vogel (GER) Takes Cardel Homes Cup
Sixty international competitors vied for the $20,625 (USD) winner’s share of the purse in the Cardel Homes Cup 1.55m on Wednesday afternoon. Just 14 horses jumped clear and advanced to the jump-off, including world #4-ranked rider Richard Vogel (GER) with Phenyo van het Keysersbos and world #8-ranked rider Steve Guerdat (SUI) riding Albfuehren’s Iashin Sitte. In the showdown, both riders posted fast clear rides, but Vogel came out on top in a time of 38.93 seconds ahead of Guerdat’s 39.29. “Once you actually get to the show, it’s so many things also outside the arena that makes it so special. The place [Spruce Meadows] itself has a very special environment and kind of a chemistry that is here that you really feel once you put a step into the place,” commented Vogel on returning to Spruce Meadows and how special it is.
“And it’s always very nice to come back. I think the horses really like it, too, and have memories here that they keep and very quickly recognize, ‘oh, we’re back in Spruce.’”

Thursday: Nina Mallevaey and My Clementine win the ATCO Cup
Spruce Meadows’ “Throwback Thursday” started with the ATCO Cup on the International Ring. Athletes were challenged over the original track from the 1976 ‘Masters’ Grand Prix — with a few
Fresh off her win of the Rolex Grand Prix in Brussels, French rider Nina Mallevaey jumped to victory in the ATCO Cup 1.50m. The big material that made up the track (much of it original material from the course in 1976) was no problem for her 10-year-old chestnut Irish Sport Horse, My Clementine, who is owned by the Rein family.
Mallevaey galloped through the finish line of the winning round clear in a time of 46.16 seconds that could not be caught, pinning Eugenio Garza Perez of Mexico riding Victer Finn DH Z and American Laura Kraut with Tres Bien Z into second and third place, respectively.

Hat Trick Victory for Richard Vogel
It was another busy afternoon on the International Ring, with 60 competitors entered in the CANA Cup 1.60m. CANA has supported Spruce Meadows since the beginning in 1975, and their chairman and CEO, John Simpson, was formerly a member of the Canadian Show Jumping Team.
FEI course designer Leopoldo Palacios laid out a challenging track, but Germany’s Richard Vogel, who won the Cardel Homes Cup the day before, seems to have found his stride at Spruce Meadows. Aboard the grey stallion Cloudio, the pair jumped clear in the jump-off in a time of 45.54 seconds to secure the win.
“We really perform our best with a lot of atmosphere and with people cheering for us,” said Vogel. “It’s starting to fill up [the Spruce Meadows grandstands] now, and when the weekend arrives Friday, Saturday, Sunday, I think when we have full stands that atmosphere is something we very much look forward to. It just gives us, extra motivation and, the horses feel that, too. So it’s always nice to to ride in front of such a crowd, like here in Spruce Meadows.”
This was Vogel’s third consecutive win of the CANA Cup at the Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’.
