Of the forty-five starters in the Enbridge Cup, on opening night of the Spruce Meadows “National”, thirteen moved forward to the Jump off. Eric Lamaze (CAN) showed again why he is ranked number one in the Rolex World Rankings. After the win, Lamaze commented that his mare, a 9 year old Belgian Warmblood, Coriana van Klapscheut is “fast becoming my 1.50m specialist. This was her 5th international win but her first on North American soil.” While she has competed in the 1.60m with success, she seems to have found her niche in the 1.50m at Spruce Meadows. Coriana van Klapscheut and Lamaze were almost a second faster than speedster Richard Spooner (USA) and his Holstein mare Lady Like. Samantha Buirs a young rider from Langley, BC placed third on her Dutch warmblood mare, Total touch.
In the opening event of the Spruce Meadows Canadian Championship, The ATB Financial Cup, American Kent Farrington edged out Eric Lamaze and British great Michael Whitaker to earn his first major win at Spruce Meadows . “Knowing that the world’s best, Eric Lamaze, was still to come in the jump off I decided to for it”, said Farrington after the win. The decision paid off aboard his 10 year old Dutch gelding Uceko.
Competitions continue tomorrow at the Spruce Meadows “National” tournament highlighted by the Prairie Mines Cup and the Spectra Energy Cup.
