Adrienne Sternlicht Wins the Recon Metal Cup 1.50m
Wednesday’s Recon Metal Cup 1.50m was the first competition of the week in which riders could qualify for the weekend’s RBC Grand Prix of Canada, presented by Rolex. The track, designed by FEI course designer Olaf Petersen Jr. of Germany featured 13 jumping efforts and a time allowed of 71 seconds. Spruce Meadows veteran Kent Farrington (USA) riding the quick chestnut Creedance held down first place throughout most of the competition. The pair had posted a clear ride with a time of 64.54 seconds that seemed to be untouchable.
Adrienne Sternlicht (USA) had gained some confidence aboard Faquitol-S in the previous week of competition and knew she could take advantage of the gelding’s large stride. She crossed the finish line clear in a time of 62.90 seconds. Top Canadian in this class was Sam Walker riding Forest Hill Farm’s Nalu Quality, placing 6th.
“It’s just the most wonderful feeling walking into the ring. Last week gave me a lot of confidence that this horse can be competitive.” said Sternlicht on returning to Spruce Meadows for the 2023 season.
Sternlicht now looks to save Faquitol-S for the RBC Grand Prix of Canada, presented by Rolex, on Saturday.
18-Year-Old Mimi Gochman Captures Kubota Cup
The Kubota Cup 1.55m on Thursday was the final qualifying competition for Saturday’s RBC Grand Prix of Canada, presented by Rolex. Twenty-four athletes started the competition over an impressive course that included a triple combination and the open water.
With a number of familiar veteran competitors in the running it was a surprise to everyone, especially 18-year-old Mimi Gochman (USA), when she was the only one able to post a clear round. Aboard the 13-year-old Holsteiner mare, Celina BH, the pair galloped through the finish line in a time of 87.55 seconds.
“I’ve been watching the Spruce Meadows Nations’ Cup in the fall for a long time. I’ve always heard stories about it. I’ve seen clips online and always been told ‘you have to go to Spruce Meadows.’ I mean, not only is it a good learning experience, but the horses love it and it’s incredible!” said Gochman on her first time at the Calgary venue.
Gochman now sets her sights on Saturday’s RBC Grand Prix of Canada, presented by Rolex.
