Jonathon Millar of Millar Brooke South in Wellington, Florida, and Perth, Ontario, suffered a head injury in an accident while driving a utility vehicle on Saturday, March 11 at the Winter Equestrian Festival. He was found injured by his wife Kelly Soleau-Millar when he failed to return home and was “quickly transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in West Palm Beach, FL, where he has had a successful brain surgery to stop a bleed and relieve swelling,” according to an initial post on the Millar Brooke South Facebook Page.
On March 20th an update was posted, reading in part: “Jonathon is in stable condition. He remains under sedation in the ICU at St Mary’s Hospital being cared for by the trauma team who is helping him around the clock on his way to recovery. These are just the first steps on a long road but Jonathon is a determined fighter.”
It also addressed the overwhelming amount of messages of concern, love and support. “The outpouring of support from the equestrian community near and far is comforting and humbling. Thank you to everyone for reaching out and keeping Jonathon and Kelly in your thoughts and prayers. A huge thank you to Cayden Hill and all of the staff at Millar Brooke Farm South for the incredible work at seamlessly keeping operations at the farm and show moving forward.”
To help offset expenses, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched by friend of the family Olivia Airhart, an equine photojournalist, media professional, and amateur rider. As of March 22nd, more than $29,000 USD has been raised towards the $500,000 goal.
The 48-year-old son of ten-time Canadian Olympian Ian Millar and brother of fellow show jumper Amy, Jonathon and Kelly have run Millar Brooke South, the US branch of Millar Brooke Farm, since 2020. A multiple grand prix winner and Nations Cup squad member, Jonathon is a veteran of World Cup Finals and World Equestrian Games. In his most recent competitive outing, he placed 3rd in the $77,300 FEI 2* 1.45m Grand Prix at TerraNova Equestrian Center in Myakka City, FL, riding Isotropic Shadow.
