The 2012 Olympian Jessica Phoenix of Cannington, ON, took home first place in the CIC 2* division aboard A Little Romance, Don and Anita Leschied’s eight-year-old Canadian Thoroughbred cross mare, at the Dreamcrest Horse Trials held June 29th in Port Perry, ON, at Dreamcrest Equestrian, one of Canada`s premiere eventing stables owned by Canadian Olympians Kelly Plitz and Ian Roberts.
Phoenix and A Little Romance earned a score of 55.9 in the dressage test putting them in seventh place heading into show jumping where the duo moved up the leaderboard into second after taking on four faults and zero time penalties. The pair tackled the cross country course posting a clear ride with 11.60 time faults to finish first overall on a score of 71.5.
“My goal going into the event was to have a solid overall performance with a strong dressage score. This was A Little Romance’s lowest dressage score at the 2* level which I was very pleased with,” commented Phoenix. “I was extremely happy with her entire performance. She felt very solid in all three phases. Thank you so much to her owner don and Anita Leschied for their incredible support and to Dreamcrest for putting on such a world class event.”
Of her plans for A Little Romance Phoenix offered “We plan on competing her at the Test Event for the World Equestrian Games which will be held August 15-18th, 2013 in Normandy France.”
Anita Nemtin-Gilmour of Palgrave, ON, riding Acrobat, her eight-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, came in just behind Phoenix on a final score of 79.6. Nemtin- Glimour was ahead of Phoenix on the scoreboard after dressage with a score of 54.8 but took on 12 faults in the show jumping dropping her to fifth. She quickly made up ground on the cross country course riding a clear round with 12.80 time penalties, which earned the pair the second place ribbon.
In the same division, Callie Evans of Reaboro, ON, rode Glendening Avis, her eight-year-old Canadian Sport Horse gelding sired by Ferrrari GS, to third on a final score of 81.5, nudging Karl Slezak of Totteham, ON, aboard Yoshi, his seven-year-old gelding sired by Halo Hunter, into fourth on their final score of 83.3. Rounding out the top five performances was Jenna Kuzenk of Oshawa, ON, riding Renegade, her 14-year-old Canadian Quarter Horse sired by Ideal Twister, finishing on their score of 103.0.
In the CIC1*, Colleen Loach of Dunham, QC, and Qorry Blue D’Argouges, Peter Barry’s nine-year-old Selles Francaise gelding sired by Mr. Blue, finished in first place on their final score of 59.8. Loach beat out Phoenix, who did double time in the division riding Exultation, her eight-year-old Canadian Thoroughbred sired by Sea Wall, to second place on a score of 60.3 and Maserati One, Don Leschied’s six-year-old Canadian Irish Sport Horse sired by Formula One, to take third on their score of 61.8. Coming fourth on a final score of 62.6 was Kendal Lehari of Uxbridge, ON, and Flin Flon, Brenda Gallie’s eight-year-old Canadian Warmblood mare sired by Rodero and Jamie Kellock of Cedar Valley, ON, took fifth riding Don’t Blink, her eight-year-old Canadian Thoroughbred mare sired by War Deputy, scoring 62.6.
