Francis Berger Releases Statement Following Recent Charges

(As reported on this website on Dec. 12, longtime Quebec coach Francis Berger was placed on EC’s Not in Good Standing list in the spring following a complaint from one woman. A second woman has come forward recently; Berger was only recently made aware of this second complainant.)

Last week I learned that two women have come forward accusing me of inappropriate conduct. Since this matter is before the courts, by respect for the judicial system I will not go into the specifics for now. However, I can say that I am innocent. In fact I plead not guilty and I am determined to defend myself against these charges.

I have been involved in the equestrian industry for more than 35 years as both a horseman and a breeder as well as a distributor of saddles and other equipment. I take enormous pride in what I have accomplished as a rider personally as well as in terms of the training of highly successful athletes. I maintain that I have always acted professionally and respectfully.

I regret my situation has become a distraction for my businesses, which is unfair to the people who work alongside me. As a result, I have decided to take a step back and am withdrawing from my involvement with both South Shore Farm and Equus Integral until this matter is resolved.

Récemment, j’ai appris que deux femmes se sont manifestées pour m’accuser de conduite inappropriée. Comme cette affaire est devant les tribunaux, par respect pour le système judiciaire, je n’entrerai pas dans les détails pour le moment. Cependant, je peux affirmer que je suis innocent. À ce titre, j’ai plaidé non coupable et je suis déterminé à me défendre contre ces accusations.

Je suis très fier de ce que j’ai accompli personnellement en tant que cavalier, ainsi qu’en termes d’entraînement d’athlètes très performants. Je maintiens que j’ai toujours agi avec professionnalisme et respect.

Je regrette que ma situation soit devenue une distraction pour mes affaires, ce qui est injuste pour les personnes qui travaillent à mes côtés. En conséquence, j’ai décidé de prendre du recul et de me retirer de ma participation à South Shore Farm et à Equus Integral jusqu’à ce que cette affaire soit résolue.
