To aid their members and the equestrian community in understanding what ‘sustainability means’ for our sport, the European Equestrian Federation have developed a range of “Quick Guides” that explain some of the key terms and areas of concern, with ideas of how they can be implemented in practice. This includes environmental issues like manure, pasture and water management, horses and biodiversity, climate change, and also the basic components of horse welfare and the importance of keeping young people safe.
The EEF recognizes that within sustainability discussions there are a lot of key words, phrases or concepts that can be hard to understand or apply to equestrianism. These Quick Guide books can help breakdown these topics and allow you to discuss and apply them at your stable or organization. The guides were created with the help of the research group Sustainable Equestrianism at Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands to make sure everything is scientifically correct, and alongside World Horse Welfare to provide their insights into the horse welfare guides.
These guides are intended to be a primer of sorts, and contain a list of links and references for those who would like to delve deeper into the science and understand more about the topics. The guides will be added to and updated over time and can be accessed here:
