Sable Giesler of Powassan, Ont. rode to a top five finish in the CIC 2* division at the Virginia Horse Trials, held May 21-24 in Lexington, Va.
Riding her seven-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, Devil Munchkin (Casiro x No Ski), Giesler completed the dressage phase with a score of 51.40 penalty points to stand in 15th place after day one. A clear show jumping round brought the pair up to eighth place. Yet another faultless performance over FEI 4*-level course designer, John Williams’ 21 obstacle course allowed Giesler and Devil Munchkin to finish in fourth place overall on their dressage score.
“Devil Munchkin was an absolute star this weekend, I couldn’t have asked for a better effort,” said Giesler, who was seeking redemption with ‘Kermit’ after taking a tumble at a water complex at the Jersey Fresh International Three-Day Event in Allentown, N.J. earlier in May (read Giesler’s good-humoured blog post about her ‘swim in the Jersey Shore’). “This is only his fifth event at the Intermediate level and he is rapidly upping his game. This is definitely a horse for the future.”
Also competing in the CIC 2* division was Rebecca Lee of Edmonton, Alta. who took 18th place on a total score of 97.80 penalties aboard Pandora’s First Avatar (Catienus x Cure the Blues), a nine-year-old Thoroughbred mare owned by Katherine Adams.
