The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is offering horse industry stakeholders the chance to comment on proposed changes to feed labels.

“While our feed regulatory modernization project is ongoing, and people are free to submit and discuss issues or provide comments to us at any time, at the moment, we have put a couple of proposals regarding modernized feed ingredient controls and feed labels out,” said Sergio Tolusso, National Manager – Feed Program Coordination and Outreach Animal Feed Division, CFIA.

He encouraged horse owners to review the proposals at this link and to contact him at Sergio.Tolusso@inspection.gc.ca with any feedback.

Of particular import for people with sensitive horses, or those with allergies, is section 4.1.4 List of ingredients (new). Currently, if you want to obtain the actual list of ingredients for a feed, you must contact the manufacturer or registrant about each bag of feed. It would be preferable if feed bags included a fixed list of ingredients.

Have a look over the current and proposed changes, learn more here, and have your say.
