Mike Winter and El Mundo finish in top 20 at Burnham Market

In a field of 86 athlete and horse combinations, Mike Winter of Thornhill, ON, finished in the top 20 in the CCI-4* S at Barefoot Retreat Burnham Market International on Sussex Farm, Norfolk, United Kingdom from April 14 – 16, 2023.

Competing on an all-grass course of rolling farmlands, Winter was paired with El Mundo (H.G K M. Derks, Merselo x Calvaro F.C.), a 14-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding he co-owns with Emma Winter and Jonathan Nelson. Starting the weekend on a dressage score of 33.3, the Canadian duo then performed a flawless show jumping round on a course designed by Sue Peasley. Rounding out the three-day event, Winter completed the cross-country course designed by Alec Lochore, adding just 10.8 time penalties to finish the competition in 19th place on a final score of 44.1.

Just metres from the Atlantic Ocean on America’s East Coast, 16 Global Champions League (GCL) teams competed in the 5* premier show jumping event in Miami Beach on April 14. Canadian show jumper Beth Underhill of Mulmur, ON, finished on the podium during the team event with the Rome Gladiators for the second consecutive year.

Underhill and her World Championship mount Nikka vd Bisschop (Emerol NOP x Nabab de Reve), a 10-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare owned by Rein Family LLC., was teamed up with France’s Nina Mallevaey on the Rome Gladiators, powered by CLIPMYHORSE.TV in the second leg of the GCL. The event that hosts some of the very best riders and horses from around the globe saw the pairs each collect four faults but with quick rounds, they were able to capture third place with a score of 147.75.

Dressage Athletes Earn Commendable Results in Ocala & Segovia

Jill Irving of Dieppe, NB, recorded an impressive score of 74.400% in the CDI3* Grand Prix Freestyle to Music on her mount Delacroix 11 (Dancier x Don Crusador), a 13-year-old Hanoverian gelding she co-owns with Windhaven on April 14 at the World Equestrian Center in Ocala, FL.

On the same day, Irving posted a score of 68.478% in the Grand Prix aboard Genesis (Jazz x Silvano N), a 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Windhaven. On April 16, the duo scored 68.979% in the Grand Prix Special and in the same test, Camille Carier Bergeron with Westphalian gelding Sound of Silence 4 (San Amour I x Limes) owned by Gilles Bergeron, posted 68.532%.

Also in Ocala, Mathilde Blais-Tetreault of Montreal, QC, posted a score of 68.391% on April 14 aboard Fedor (Johnson TN x Negro), a 13-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Laurence Blais-Tetreault.

Overseas in Segovia, Spain, Naima Moreira-Laliberté of Outremont, QC, and her World Championships mount Statesman (Sandra Hit x Brentano II) a 16-year-old Hanoverian gelding owned by KML Inc. whom she has been partnered with since 2018, recorded a score of 68.915% in the CDI3* Grand Prix Special.
