The five Canadian show jumpers that have been declared for CHIO Aachen in Germany, running July 8-17, are most likely Canada’s show jumping team for Rio:
Yann Candele – First Choice 15, Showgirl
Kara Chad – Bella Strade, Bellinda, Gin Tonic v. Haagakkers, Jana van de Elshoeve (YH)
Tiffany Foster – Tripple X III, Victor, Caipiranja (YH)
Eric Lamaze – Check Picobello Z, Fine Lady 5, Chacco Kid
Amy Millar – Heros
Note: Only horses in bold are Olympic-qualified
The event is also being used by most of the US Olympic jumping team as preparation for Rio. Beezie Madden/Cortes C, McLain Ward/HH Azur, Lucy Davis/Barron and reserve rider Laura Kraut/Zeremonie are all listed as attending, though Kent Farrington and Voyeur are not.
CHIO Aachen (chioaachen.de/en/) – the World Equestrian Festival – is virtually an annual scaled-down version of the FEI World Equestrian Games (minus reining and para-dressage) featuring Nations’ Cup competitions in dressage, jumping, eventing, driving, and vaulting, and attracting about 350,000 spectators yearly. Results at this show, one of the toughest and most prestigious on the calendar every year, could well dictate who is named fourth team member and reserve. Watch our news feed for updates.
An impressive number of Olympic-qualified combinations (and likely as-yet-to-be-named Olympic team members) will also compete at Aachen. These include France’s Simon Delestre (Qlassic Bois Margot, Ryan des Hayettes) and Roger-Yves Bost (Qoud’Coeur de la Loge, Sangria du Coty; Germany’s Christian Ahlman (Taloubet Z, Epleaser van’t Heike) and Ludger Beerbaum (Casello, Chiara 222); and Steve Guerdat of Switzerland (Nino des Buissonnets, Bianca) – making this a week of sport to watch closely as a preview of Olympic matchups to come.
