Colic surgery could not stop Angela Covert and Utan, a 16-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, from continuing to collect victories in the show ring. The pair started out the weekend May 18-21 at Fox Lea Farm Spring Concours II in Venice, Florida by placing second in the $5,000 Welcome Stake, right behind Covertโ€™s 11-year-old German-bred mare, Billie Jean. Both horses were ridden to double clear rounds.

The following day in the $25,000 Grand Prix, Covert rode Utan to an exciting win โ€“ A first place finish in the geldingโ€™s second time back in the Grand Prix ring after colic surgery.

โ€œWe took much longer than even the surgeon suggested to bring Utan back to jumping and competing,โ€ Covert said. โ€œAs hopeful as I was, I didnโ€™t feel there was any pressure or expectation to have him return to the Grand Prix ring โ€“ He had already done so much for me and my career.โ€
