The 2021 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) once again hosted the WEF Sport Horse Auction on March 4, 2021, at Equestrian Village. A curated collection of horses were on offer from the distinguished VDL Stud in the Netherlands, the official #1 KWPN breeder of grand prix horses. Marking its ninth anniversary in Wellington, this live, phone-in and online auction presents a rare opportunity for athletes and investors to view and bid on a world-class selection of show jumping superstars, all in one place.
With a total return of $2,830,000 USD and an average of $235,000 the sale was deemed very successful. Due to the COVID-19 situation, organizers were unsure if the auction could even take place, but together with WEF it was decided to run it under strict protocols.
The top seller was VDL High Five, a seven-year-old mare by Harley VDL x Berlin, which sold for $500,000. Other notable prices included $360,000 for VDL Jesmond (Harley VDL x Cash), and VDL Lovely Boy (Arezzo VDL x Campbell VDL) and VDL Ironic (Carrera VDL x Quantum) which both sold for $310,000.
