The FEI would like to reiterate its confidence and faith in LOCOG to ensure that environmental considerations and the local community are placed at the top of the agenda in planning of this world class event. Indeed, LOCOG will undergo a full programme of local community consultation prior to the submission of planning documents later this year, and in addition, ongoing detailed environmental surveys on all ecological aspects of the park will be submitted as part of the environmental impact assessment.
Greenwich Park was chosen to host the Equestrian events of the Olympic & Paralympic Games for the following reasons:
• It is located close to the Olympic Park which allows athletes to be accommodated within the Olympic Village and close to the action, this placing equestrian back at the heart of the Games
• It maintains a “compact Games” – a key requirement of the IOC
• It is an iconic location and will raise the profile of equestrian sport
• There is no existing venue in the UK that could host the three equestrian disciplines simultaneously and there is no demand for such a facility to be created on a permanent basis in the UK to Olympic specifications, and no clear business case for sustaining such a facility post Games.
