Baron is Best in Barrie in Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series

Barrie, ON – Baron won the Seven and Eight-Year-Old Division when the third event in the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series was held June 29 at the Cornerstone Horse Show in Barrie, ON.

A seven-year-old selle francais gelding ridden by Hyde Moffatt of Brantford, ON, Baron was double clear over the 1.35m course set for the Seven and Eight-Year-Old Division by Puerto Rico’s Hector Loyola. Sired by Ulior des Isles and out of a Narcos II dam, Baron was imported by owner Mark Hayes in January of 2006 and finished the season as the Ontario Six-Year-Old Champion.

“Baron is a brave and careful horse, and he’s been jumping a lot of clear rounds,” noted Hayes, who operates Kestral Farms and owns several horses that have proven to be successful in the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series. “The sponsorship is there to support the Series, and I hope that it continues to progress.”

Moffatt and Hayes also teamed up to take second place with Atlanta van de Padenborre, a seven-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding by Ahorn Z out of a Quidam de Revel dam. Moffatt and Atlanta van de Padenborre were also clear in the jump-off, but in a slower time to place second.

Third place went to Frankie Chesler-Ortiz of Orangeville, ON, and Aslan, the only other combination to advance to the jump-off. A seven-year-old chestnut Dutch Warmblood gelding, Aslan is by Kigali and out of a Le Mexico dam.

While Moffatt dominated the top two spots in the Seven and Eight-Year-Old Division, Elliott Stone did the same in the Six-Year-Old Division. A total of nine horse-rider combinations advanced to the jump-off with Stone of Midland, ON, guiding Ursiena, his Dutch Warmblood by Lancelot, to the winning time of 33.45 seconds. Stable mate Untouchable, a Dutch Warmblood by Karandasj, placed second with a time of 34.13 seconds.

Taking third place with a double clear round in a time of 35.75 seconds was Accabello, a German-bred by Accarat owned by Paige and Gord Munro and ridden by Ben Murphy.

The Canadian-bred GH Fortune’s Son took top honours in the Five-Year-Old Division with rider Carly Campbell Coooper of Elora, ON. Bred and owned by Glenhadden Farm of London, ON, GH Fortune’s Son jumped clear for a score of 50 and received a style score of 41.5 from the judge to win with the highest score of the day, 91.5. GH Fortune’s Son is by Futurist, a Hannoverian stallion by For Pleasure owned by W. Charlot Farms that is currently being shown in the jumper division by Erynn Ballard.

Placing second with a final score of 91 was J.R., owned by Gord and Paige Munro of Tottenham, ON, and ridden by Ben Murphy. German-bred, J.R. is by the Westphalian stallion, Pep, out of a state premium mare by Goldlack.

Taking third with a score of 90 was the Canadian-bred VDL Viper H owned and ridden by Michelle Vandal. Bred by Hogendoorn Sporthorse Imports, VDL Viper H is a Canadian Warmblood gelding by Corland out of an Ahorn dam.

The Four-Year-Old Division represented a huge victory for Canadian breeding as the top nine placings at the Cornerstone Horse Show all went to Canadian-bred horses. Taking first place was the W. Charlot Farms entry of Rio’s Lovestory W. Having also won the first competition of the 2007 Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series, Rio’s Lovestory W made a return trip to the winner’s circle under rider Erynn Ballard. A clear round and a style score of 42 gave the grey Canadian Warmblood mare by Rio Grande a total score of 92 for the win.

Placing second with a total score of 91 was the Canadian Sport Horse gelding Relevant K owned by Danielle Vauaroutsos and ridden by Jennifer Ramsey, a member of Canada’s Nations’ Cup teams in the late 1990’s. The runner-up in the prestigious Governor General’s Cup at the 2006 Royal Horse Show, Relevant K is by Popeye K and out of a thoroughbred dam and was bred by Karen and Sal DiCaro.

The KingRidge Stables entry of Heads Up 3E placed third with a score of 90. Ridden by Roberto Teran, Heads Up 3E is a Canadian Sport Horse mare by Jamestown out of a Class Action mare.

The purpose of the Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series is to encourage the development of young show jumping talent and to give Canadian breeders additional incentives to breed superior show jumping prospects. Competing on a level playing field, the horses are divided according to age and jump at a level suited to their development. This careful development allows the horses to gain valuable experience and advance to the higher levels of show jumping competition with confidence. The Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series also gives prospective buyers for the hunter and jumper markets an opportunity to view a large group of prospects in a competition setting.

The 2007 Canadian Young Horse Jumper Development Series includes seven events in Ontario and six in Quebec with the Eastern Canadian Finals taking place September 19-23 at the Tournament of Champions in Palgrave, ON. A total of eight events will be held in Alberta and British Columbia with the Western Canadian Finals taking place August 22-27 at Thunderbird Show Park in Langley, BC. The National Young Horse Finals will feature $52,000 in total prize money, and will be held during the CSI-W Tournament of Champions in Palgrave, ON, from September 19-23.
