Ottawa, ON—Ali Homes-Smith of Chase, BC, led the Canadians competing at the CCI Three Day Event at Rebecca Farm, held July 24-27 in Kalispell, MT, USA. 

The popular competition is part of the HSBC FEI Eventing World CupTM Qualifier Series hosted the CIC-W 3* division as well as CCI 2*, CCI 1* international three day event and CIC 1* horse trials divisions.

In the CCI 2* division, Homes-Smith took first place aboard Paddington, a 13-year-old Canadian bred Welsh cross gelding, which she co-owns with her husband former Olympian Nick Holmes-Smith. The pair was in fourth place after dressage, scoring 60.2. A clean performance over International Course Designer Mark Phillips cross-country course added no faults to their score moving them up to third place.  They were the only pair to ride fault-free in the show jumping test to take the win.

Rebecca Lee of Bon Accord, AB, and her horse Gold Twist, an eight-year-old Oldenburg Thoroughbred cross gelding, finished in eighth place in the CCI** division.

“Paddington was brilliant. I think it was the best cross-country I have ever had with him,” explained Homes-Smith. “I am hoping to complete at the advanced level in the fall and move him up to complete the CIC 3*- W division at Rebecca Farm this time next year.”

In the CIC 3*-W division, Chelan Kozak rode Tasman Sea, a 10-year-old New Zealand Thoroughbred gelding to a third place finish. Sitting in eighth position after dressage on a score of 73.3, the pair incurred just 7.6 time penalties on cross-country. Sixteen jumping, over a show jumping course that saw many rails come down, moved them up to their final placing, with a total penalty score of 96.9.

American Tory Smith won the CIC 3*-W division riding Bantry Bay V with a score of 55.

In the CCI 1* without steeplechase division, Glynis Schultz of Brentwood Bay, BC, was the highest placed Canadian, finishing second, with her 10-year-old Canadian Thoroughbred gelding Irish on a score of 51.9. The pair was standing in second after dressage, and finished the competition on their dressage score after turning in clear cross-country and show jumping performances.

Caroline Smith of Spruce Grove, AB, finished in seventh place riding David Smith’s Tessa, a seven-year-old Quarter Horse mare. The pair was in 13th place following dressage with a score of 68.8. The pair added just 2.4 time cross-country penalties and eight show jumping penalties to finish on a final score of 79.2. Michelle Meacher of Surrey, BC, and Daytrader, a 13-year-old Percheron Thoroughbred cross gelding, finished in 10th place with a score of 95.1. Caroline Petty of Red Deer, AB, and Mac Gilly Cudy rounded out the Canadian riders in 12th place.

The winner of the CCI 1* without steeplechase division was American Kelly Prather and Ballinkill Glory.

Darcie Kerkhoven of Deroche, BC, finished in fifth in the CCI 1* with steeplechase division, riding Grace, an 11-year-old Canadian Sport Horse mare. With a fourth place dressage score of 54.8, the duo put added 20 jump penalties on the cross-country phase. One rail in the show jumping phase gave them a final score of 78.8 for fifth place.

Nicholas Cwick of the US won the CCI 1* with steeplechase division aboard Sir Donovan.

In the CIC 1* horse trials divisions Suzy Pettman Elliott, who currently resides in Yelm, WA, was the top placed Canadian rider with Chauncy, Jonathan Elliott’s six-year-old thoroughbred gelding. Pettman Elliott had a clean cross-country ride, but added 12 show jumping faults to finish in eighth place with 75.6. Miss Congeniality and Sarah Cunningham of Stony Plain, AB, were 11th with 97.5, and Lee and her second horse Good As Gold finished right behind in 12th place. Rounding out the Canadian placings was Noel Clark of Calgary, AB, and Protocol who placed 13th.

American Emily Pestl-Dimmitt won the CIC 1* division with Talus.
