On March 1st of this year, a valuable new app for riders was launched by Karin Ronde, a tech-savvy equestrian from Burlington, Ontario. Empower Equine was created for beginners, returning riders, and anyone looking to build confidence and improve their skills. The app helps users track progress, set goals, and connect with the equestrian community. While it aligns with Equestrian Canada’s Learn to Ride program, Empower Equine is designed for anyone, anywhere — and is especially helpful for those without regular access to a coach.
The app includes self-guided rides that can be followed independently or used by coaches with their students. Riders can track their development through eight riding levels by checking off mastered skills and identifying next steps, with or without an instructor. Video tutorials, created by an accredited coach, cover lesson plans, stable management, and best practices for horse care and welfare, with quizzes available to test horse knowledge.
Ronde credits her six-year-old OTTB, Chocolate Run (now named Princeton), as the inspiration behind Empower Equine.
“I have been riding all my life and have leased and part-boarded, but never trained a horse until I got him. He’s the reason I came up with the idea for the app in the first place — I wanted a place to log our training and track our progress. When I talked to other riders, I found that many were struggling with the same challenges.”
With a solid background in tech, Ronde was well-equipped to turn her idea into reality.
“I’ve always been interested in web development and wanted to see if I could build an app. I loved the idea of creating something I could use myself, but also something that others would find helpful,” she explains. “I started compiling feedback in November 2024; the build started in December and took just over three months.”
For those preparing for the Equestrian Canada Levels Assessment, Empower Equine can serve as a valuable study tool.
“We’ve included the official practice tests and rubrics from the Equestrian Canada Assessments,” says Ronde, “so riders can be confident they’re covering everything required.”
Just four months post-launch, the response has been overwhelmingly positive.
“The feedback has been really great!” says Ronde. “I recently added an AI-powered chatbot — you can upload a photo and it will evaluate your riding posture and offer tips for improvement. There’s nothing else like it on the market right now, so I’m excited about that.”
Looking ahead, Ronde hopes to expand the app’s functionality.
“I’d like to add GPS tracking for real-time ride logging. Right now, I’m gathering user feedback to help guide our priorities for future updates in the fall.”
With a supportive, user-friendly environment that encourages personal growth and skill development, Empower Equine offers riders of all levels a comprehensive tool for tracking progress and learning in a safe, engaging way.
