An exciting and innovative equestrian event will take place at the world-class Longines Tops International Arena in Valkenswaard, the Netherlands, July 11–13, 2025. The Baran Global Hunter Classic is an ambitious three-day, €300,000 ($468,500CAD) hunter competition designed to elevate and showcase the beauty and finesse of the hunter discipline on the world stage.

The class, co-founded by top Canadian hunter competitor Kristen Baran and US hunter trainer Andrew Lustig, will invite the top 10 riders from a combination of USHJA International Hunter Derby Championships, USHJA World Champion Hunter Rider standings and wildcard spots. Each “team captain” will be paired with a junior or amateur rider of their choice, as well as an international jumper athlete currently ranked in the Top 50 on the Longines Rankings.
The combined field of 30 riders will compete over the course of three days in various warm-up, under-saddle and 3’6″ hunter and handy hunter rounds. Scores will be based on handiness, pace, track and brilliance, and will be awarded by a panel of six esteemed hunter judges.
In addition to Baran, a generous sponsor of hunter competitions, charity classes and fundraising events, the majority of the leadership team is Canadian: Chris Sorensen of Sorensen Stables is leading the production charge, supported by Helm Limited’s Mike Belisle, longtime show manager and consultant; Will Sorensen, a seasoned sports marketer, directs the media team; the team is also aided by the expertise of Whitney Sorensen and Rebecca Doherty.
HorseSport.com fielded some questions to Chris Sorensen about this unique inaugural event.
Why is the time right for the Baran Global Hunter Classic?
“The sport is constantly evolving, and we believe it’s time for hunters to progress alongside the jumpers. This event is about taking the initiative to drive that evolution. Andrew Lustig had the vision, Kristen Baran quickly got on board, and together, we are excited to make a meaningful impact on how hunters are showcased.”

Are there currently many (or any) hunter shows in Europe?
“There are actually more hunter shows in Europe than many people realize. France has had a hunter series for quite some time, and both the Dutch and Belgian federations also host hunter shows. However, the style differs slightly from what we typically see in America.”
Are you hoping to make this a series, including at North American shows?
“Yes, the goal is to make this a series or tour, with more details expected to be released at this year’s event. North America will absolutely be included, and we are working closely with show organizers to integrate the class into some of the most prestigious existing equestrian competitions. Stay tuned for more updates!”
Have any hunter or jumper riders committed yet?
“We’re incredibly excited to reveal our teams, but at this time, the details remain confidential as we finalize our preparations. Team announcements are coming soon.”

The entry package is not disclosed but is valued at over €100,000 and includes air transport for horses, accommodation for riders and grooms, VIP experiences and more?
“The entry package for this event is designed to provide exceptional value and includes numerous benefits for both horse and rider. Our goal is to give hunter riders the same elevated experience as 5* jumper riders at major championships. By handling all logistics for horses, riders and grooms, we allow competitors to focus entirely on their performance, ensuring they receive the same level of support and prestige as top-level jumpers.”
Who will the course designer be?
“We are thrilled to announce that fellow Canadian and 2024 USHJA/WCHR Course Designer of the Year, Kevin Holowack, has been confirmed as the course designer for the event. His expertise and vision will undoubtedly bring an exciting and innovative element to the competition!”
Livestreaming for this event will be available via the Longines Tops International Arena channels in Europe and a North American livestream/broadcast partner yet to be announced.
