In early May, top Canadian eventer Selena O’Hanlon expanded her sales and training business by opening a barn at Waterstone Farm in Caledon, Ontario, a location owned by good friend and student Ann Heuckendorff, who has had the facility for six years.
“I made the move because I wanted my horses to have access to hills which are excellent for strength training,” said O’Hanlon. “It’s also a horsey mecca and much closer to Toronto so it gives my many sales horses much greater visibility.”
O’Hanlon has a limited number of training stalls at the Caledon location and is offering ship-in lessons for dressage and stadium, with cross-country sessions off-property. The original Kingston, ON, location at Balsam Hall, run by her mom and biggest supporter, Morag O’Hanlon, provides rehab programs for horses with icing, wrapping, hand-walking, Bemer therapy, TheraPlate, and managed turnout. O’Hanlon Eventing will also be offering show jumping and dressage clinics at Balsam Hall throughout the summer on June 25th, July 30th, and Sept 10th.
A broken leg in August of 2020, plus Covid restrictions, kept Selena out of competitive action for almost a year. Now that her 19-year-old international partner Foxwood High is enjoying retirement at the barn of his owners, John and Judy Rumble, she has been campaigning a couple of nice younger horses. M S Thunderbolt is an eight-year-old Holsteiner/ISH. “We purchased him as a five-year-old in Ireland through Hutchison Sport Horses. He’s just moved up to the intermediate level and we plan to compete in 3*-L this fall,” she says. The pair were 3rd in the CCI2*-L at the Ocala International Festival of Eventing in April. MHF Lady is a 12-year-old Thoroughbred cross who belongs to Poppy von Maltzahn, a Young Rider student of Selena’s. “I was lucky enough to compete her while Poppy was in university.” And while the O’Hanlons do not breed horses any more, “Anne Marie Duarte, my groom, rides one of my homebreds, Rather Boldly, at the prelim level.”
