TELUS is proud of its long-standing partnership with Spruce Meadows, with 2025 marking the 36th year of the partnership and the 11th year presenting Spruce Meadows’ Name the Foal contest.

The contest originated at Spruce Meadows in the 1980s, with guests dropping name suggestions into a ballot box.

It was opened up to the entire country in the early 90s, and has garnered millions of entries since, with the top names selected by a committee of Spruce Meadows judges.

The main rule is that entrants must follow traditional naming conventions of the Hanoverian breed, meaning foals’ names must begin with the same first letter of their sire’s, or father’s, name.

Wendy Scott is a proud with grandmother who lives on a small farm west of Lacombe, AB. A long time fan of Spruce Meadows, it was her daughter, an avid horse love, that convinced her to start making an annual trip over 20 years ago!

This was the first time Wendy submitted a name for the contest, but she felt that the name honoured the great lady, Margaret Southern, who co-founded Spruce Meadows 50 years ago. Truly a legacy.
