The first CSIO 5* at the Polo Club de Saint-Tropez – Haras de Gassin, host of the 4th leg of the Longines League of Nations™ 2025 global series, kicked off in style Thursday. The Netherlands, Luxembourg and France made their mark under bright sunshine.
A true jewel of more than 100 hectares located just a stone’s throw from the Mediterranean, the venue offers an exceptional setting for both riders and spectators.
The day’s main class, a 1.55m against the clock presented by Haras de Gassin, qualifying for Friday’s Grand Prix, saw victory for the Netherlands through Kevin Jochems. With a perfectly executed round in 65.50 seconds, the 30-year-old rider and his Prada di Costa M, starting second to last, edged out Stephan de Freitas Barcha, who had led since almost the start of the evening. Partnered with his energetic Dinozo Imperio Egipcio, the Brazilian finished in 65.83 seconds.
South America was also in the spotlight as Argentina’s José Maria Larocca claimed equal 3rd place with Finn Lente (67.94). He shared this result with Roger-Yves Bost (FRA) and Delph de Denat*HDC, who stopped the clock at exactly the same time. “My mare is incredible. She is always very consistent, week after week. I am delighted to be here in Gassin. The facilities are outstanding. I am looking forward to the upcoming classes!” said the evening’s winner.
A little earlier, in the opening class of the CSIO 5*, the 1.45m Two-Phase presented by Derbez was won by the always fast Victor Bettendorf (LUX), riding Encore Toi du Linon. They completed their second phase in 25.34 seconds, ahead of France’s Simon Delestre, long in the lead with Dexter Fontenis Z (26.49). Another French rider completed the podium, Marie Demonte with Give me One Reason DK (26.90).
“My mare is very fast and careful. I know I don’t need to take too many risks to get a good placing, even though today I did leave out a stride before the final double, but it paid off. I love coming to Gassin. The setting is exceptional. It’s incredible to see how the venue has evolved in the last two years, and the organizers continue to improve it. Today, the conditions are extraordinary, both for us riders and for our horses, who are perfectly accommodated in permanent stabling. It’s a pleasure to support shows like this,” reacted the Luxembourger.
