Montreal’s horse-drawn carriage (calèche) industry is set to receive a half a million dollars in funding to help improve operations and regulate the safety of the horses and the public.
The decision was made by the Ville-Marie borough council last week, during it’s monthly council meeting. The move comes just seven months after Montreal mayor, Denis Coderre, tried to ban the carriages.
The attempted ban was overturned in court and the 24 carriages were allowed back to work. Coderre promised to create new polices surrounding the horses, their care and public safety.
It is reported that the funding will be used to improve services for operators and regulate the safety of the horses. The money will be spent on new carriage shelters, places to tie up the horses, microchips for the animals and proper training for operators. Drivers will also have to wear uniforms. Read more here.
