Records were broken at the Bolesworth Elite Auction when a foal by Nick Skelton’s Olympic legend, Big Star out of Tinka’s Serenade, the former ride of Billy Twomey made £92,000 under the hammer.
The chestnut colt, looked a million dollars in the Bolesworth International spotlights and brought huge interest from across the globe with telephone bids and VIP hospitality guests causing a flurry of excitement.
It is believed the sum is the highest price paid for a show jumping-bred foal in the UK with the British-bred youngster going to Saudi Arabia.
Another to cause much interest was the bay colt, Crunch Van’t Ameldonk Z, by Comme Il Faut out of Dorina Du Domaine, a mare by Diamant De Semilly, out of Crystale D’helby, that made £62,000 and also went to the Middle East.
The evening has to go down as one of the most historic in sport horse auction history, and the first lot, Millfield Caught Short, a stunning bay filly by Cornet Obolensky, and born in May also proved popular making £28,000 and got the auction off to a fantastic start.
Leading Irish show jumper, Greg Broderick was delighted with the prices made when selling BP Golden Moments, a bay colt by Stakkato Gold out of Ballypatrick Flight, a half sister to MHS Going Global for £38,000 to the Ukraine and BP Super Kal-Ei for £23,000 to America.
Said Greg: “The Bolesworth Elite Auction just gets better and better and there were some great improvements this year, all credit to Nina Barbour and the team.”
Sourced from the best show jumping horse breeders and producers in Europe, the 18 lots presented, made £443,000 averaging more than £24,600, at an auction that was the talk of the sport horse world on the Friday evening of The Equerry Bolesworth International Horse Show.
Without doubt this year’s Bolesworth Elite Auction proved a real high spot, with the electric atmosphere projected all around the international arena on a warm, floodlit evening.
The auction expanded this year to include foals and a limited number of special embryos, as well as yearlings and was run in partnership with Luk Van Puymbroeck and Gerald Lenearts, organisers of the successful Flanders foal auctions, based in Belgium.
The unique concept of selecting youngstock with ‘Black type’ dam lines was developed this year following the 2016 auction success.
The strict criteria for selection ensured that every lot was by a top commercial show jumping stallion, with close relations on the dam side that have competed internationally at 1.50m level or above.
