On Saturday, May 2, approximately 80 members of ten Central Ontario Pony Clubs took part in the Central Ontario Regional Quiz at Sutton District High School in Sutton. Quiz includes a written test, a visual test where competitors have to identify strange, obscure and unusual horsy objects by sight (older competitors often have to read an X-Ray), an oral test and several “Quiz Stations” (games). The divisions in Quiz are based on age and knowledge level. The D, D1 and D2 levels are for the youngest and least experienced members, the C level for the intermediates, and the A/B level for the oldest and most experienced. D and D1 competition is on a team basis only, while the higher levels compete as both individuals and teams.
Highlights
the A/B level, Maple fielded the only team and took first place. At the C level, Ajax was the only entry. In the D2 competition, Ajax placed first, Maple second and Whitchurch third. Teams from the Durham Pony Club placed one-two at the D1 level, with Simcoe third. Ajax Pony Club teams finished first and second in the D division, with a team from Maple tied for second place and no third place awarded.
Kyra Holmes of the Maple Pony Club qualified to represent Central Ontario in A/B competition at the National Quiz, to be held in British Columbia this October. Katherine Earle of Ajax and Hilary Howran of Kawartha qualified at the C level. At the D2 level, ribbons went to the top individual competitors, Emma Lemay-Nedjelski and Lindsay Tucker, both of Ajax, and Jennifer Stoltz of Maple.
Pony Clubs also compete at a Branch level on display projects, based on one of several set themes. This year Centaurus Pony Club finished first (“Biography of one Canadian Olympic Rider with a Pony Club Background”), Ajax was second (“History of Ajax Pony Club”) and Uxbridge-Scugog was third (“Bloodlines of a Canadian Horse (any breed) with Pony Club Connections”).
“Ancora Imparo”, the motto for Central Ontario Quiz, is Italian for “I am still learning” – attributed to Michelangelo.
