Canadian Show Jumping Team finished in fourth place at the 2012 FEI Nations’ Cup™ Promotional League Final at CSIO5* Barcelona, held in Barcelona, ESP, September 20-23, 2012.
Spanish course designer Javier Trenor set a long course for the two round Final that resulted in only 12 clear efforts out of the 53 rounds and one double clear ride during the competition.
Canada’s Nations’ Cup team consisted of Jonathan Asselin of Calgary, AB and Showgirl, a 12-year-old Selle Francais mare owned by Attache Stables, Spruce Grove, AB’s Lisa Carlsen with La Boom, a 13-year-old Oldenburg gelding owned by La Boom Syndicate, Tiffany Foster from Schomberg, ON riding Southwind VDL, a 13-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding she co-owns with Artisan Farms LLC, and Courtney Vince, of Burlington, ON paired with Valetto Jx, a 10-year-old Scottish Sport Horse gelding owned by Ashford Farm.
As the lead-off rider, Foster had two rails and a time fault, followed by Vince, who made her debut on the Canadian Show jumping Team, with 12 faults, which was the first round drop score. Asselin had a clear first round, while Carlsen received eight faults. Following the first round, Canada had a score of 17 faults, which had the team in sixth position.
Canada rebounded in the second round with Foster incurring two rails for eight faults, Vince had one time fault, Asselin dropped one rail and added a time fault for a second round team score of 14 to move them up to fourth place overall. Carlsen’s second round was the drop score with 24 faults. The Canadian Team had a two-round total of 31 faults.
“We ended our Spanish tour today with a very creditable fourth place finish in the Nations Cup at the Barcelona CSIO 5*,” commented Chef d’équipe Mark Laskin. “The highlights were a fantastic clean first round for Jonathan Asselin followed up by a solid second round, and Courtney Vince, in her Nations Cup debut, tidying up her first round score with only a time fault in the second round. It’s such an invaluable experience for our riders to compete as a team against all the best riders in Europe. It was a very commendable effort from everyone in a pressure situation.”
Host nation Spain won the Nations Cup with a two-round total of eight. Sweden was second with 12, followed by Italy with a score of 21.
Riding Whitney, a nine-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare owned by Artisan Farms LLC and Torrey Pines Stable, Foster also finished in 10th place in the 12’000 € 1.50m Prueba No. 8 Trofeu “la Caixa.”
