After having announced concurrent 4* (July 27-31) and 3* (August 3-7) FEI shows earlier this year, show organizer Roger Deslauriers has announced that the two weeks of shows would now be run as national competitions. A post on the International Bromont Facebook page reads, “Bromont International has decided to postpone FEI classes to next year and accept waiting list horses. Standby people will be contacted shortly to reconfirm stalls.” There are only a dozen 3/4/5* CSI run at just six venues in Canada each year ‒ Thunderbird, Spruce Meadows, Angelstone, The Royal, Ottawa, and Bromont.
Riders and spectators had been looking forward to a $230,500 CSI4* Grand Prix and the $109,000 CSI3* Grand Prix, but an expected lack of entries forced the show to downgrade its status. Deslauriers said the reason for the decision was that he had been away a lot over the winter and the required competition filings to the FEI, and the subsequent authorization, had been a bit delayed. “I didn’t want to do it, but I was afraid I would not have enough FEI horses. It is no one’s fault but our own.” he said. For the national show, however, “Right now we have 700 horses.”
The revised format will offer a $50,000 feature grand prix each week, as well as a $15,000 Modified Grand Prix, a $10,000 U25 Grand Prix, and a $5,000 Hunter Derby. The new prize list will be available online on June 21st here.
