The MARS EQUESTRIAN Bromont CCI Three Day Event saw another stellar day of top level competition in the Eastern Townships of Quebec at the Bromont Olympic Equestrian Park.
Finishing the day for the CCI4*-L at the top of the leader board sits Boyd Martin in first and second. Boyd’s first to go, On Cue, added just 1.6 time penalties to finish the day with a score of 32.30 but this gave his second mount, Ray Price, the lead with a clear round on a score of 32.20.
Boyd said of Ray Price, “He’s a lightning-fast horse. He’s a work in progress. He’s obviously a favourite of mine as I bred him in Australia and rode his mother and grandmother.”
Speaking about preparation for coming to Bromont CCI Boyd said, “He did not give me the best feel at Jersey (Fresh CCI) and my coach, Phillip Dutton, gave me 3 or 4 good cross-country schooling sessions and it made an incredible difference.”
Dressage leader in the CCI3* U25 section, Alyssa Phillips added just 1.6 time to finish cross-country on a penalty score of 27.30 with Oskar. This allows her one rail going in to Sunday jumping ahead of Alexandra Baugh (USA) and Ballingowan Pizazz who stands in second with a score of 33.20.
Alyssa, who is originally from Texas, rides with Coatesville, PA-based top rider Jennie Brannigan. Oskar is a 10-year-old Holsteiner gelding purchased from Liz Halliday-Sharp. Of the cross-country Alyssa said, “It went really well, I’d had a lot of input from the other girls on the team and you know Leslie had told me some things.”
The Leslie who Alyssa was referring to is Leslie Law, the Olympic gold medalist from the Athens 2004 Olympic Games who is coaching a team at Bromont as part of USEF/USET Foundation North American Futures Team Challenge.
To be considered to take part of USEF/USET Foundation North American Futures Team Challenge Athletes submitted applications to the USEF Performance Advisory Team. They are identified based on their results, potential, willingness to learn, and commitment to developing into future team athletes, following the FEI Eventing Nations Cup selection criteria as a guideline. Both members of the USEF Training Lists and ‘wild card’ athletes were able to apply. Duvander and Leslie Law, USEF Eventing Emerging Athlete and Development Potential Coach, each serve as a chef d’equipe.
Vermont’s Kylie Lyman (USA) and the 12-year-old bay Irish Sport Horse gelding Da Vinci Code owned by Joan Nichols added nothing to their dressage score of 28.30, rising to the top in the CCI3*-L.
Sondra Shantz of Napanee, Ontario riding her own 9-year-old bay & white Canadian Sport Horse mare Unique added nothing to rise above the CCI2*-L field of competitors. Coached by fellow Ontario rider Kendall Lehari of Uxbridge, this is the first Preliminary horse that Sondra has competed, she bought Unique at the age of two.
Maintaining his lead and adding zero cross-country penalties in the CCI2*-L U25 section, Michael Pendleton on Carlsburg are 30.30 going in to Sunday morning.
Last to go today was the CCI3*-S, another great round for Boyd Martin who incurred just 2.4 time penalties riding a 10-year old thoroughbred chestnut gelding called Barry. The horse is owned by the Cochranville, PA based rider and Windurra USA, LLC.
The schedule for tomorrow will be starting with horse inspections at 8:00am followed by show jumping beginning at 9:30am. Entrance to the event is free for spectators and show jumping on Sunday will be live streamed through our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/BromontCCI/
