The Argentine Open is the most important and renowned polo tournament in Argentina and worldwide. The 120th edition concluded on December 7th at the Campo Argentino del Polo in Buenos Aires, where it has been held since 1928.
The final match saw Canadian Fred Mannix Jr., and his team, La Alegria (Polito Pieres, Hilario Ulloa and Lucas Monteverde) take on La Dolfina (Adolfo Cambiaso, Pelon Stirling, Pablo MacDonough and Sebastian Merlos). It was a close one, but La Dolfina came out on top, winning 16-11.
Had his team won, Mannix would have been the first Canadian to claim the coveted cup since Montreal’s Lewis Lacey, who won the Argentine Open eight times between 1915 and 1937.
Mannix, who is a member of Calgary’s Mannix family, owners of the Mancal Group of companies, has become a top-ranked polo player in Argentina.
