Ainsley Vince and California brought the heat to win the $10,000 Open Canadian Hunter Derby, Presented by Pommies Cider Co., held Sunday, July 6, during the RBC Ottawa Summer Tournament I at Wesley Clover Parks in Ottawa, ON.
A total of 38 horse-rider combinations took their turn on Wesley Clover Parks’ expansive grass field. A beautiful course set by Meghan Rawlins of Victoria, BC, and decorated by Levko Malyna of Ottawa, ON, encouraged riders to showcase their talents and those of their mounts. Two sections were offered with 15 competitors electing to compete at the 3’6” height before the fences were lowered to 3’3” for the remaining 23.
Weather proved to be an added challenge for competitors to contend with, but luckily for Vince and California, there was a small break in the rain just in time for their trip.
“I got lucky!” exclaimed Vince, who contested the 3’3” section. “The rain broke for five minutes, and I went in that window. My horse does not like the rain.”
As for the course, Vince commented, “I thought it was very well done. The jumps were beautifully set. It was built to make the horses jump well with big ground lines and lots of fill. My plan was to have a solid score as he hasn’t done that many derbies on this field. We went up the hill and down the hill and he carried a smooth, even rhythm. I can’t say enough good things about this field. It’s the best one in the east.”
From her base score of 91, Vince earned an additional 10 points for taking all the high options offered and a further eight points for handiness from judge Carol DeLacy. Her total score of 109 gave her the win over RoseZalie Jutras of Bromont, QC, who rode her own State of Mind to a total score of 108 and defending champion Isabelle Lapierre of Lévis, QC, who took third with a final score of 107 riding her longtime partner Carrera S, a 15-year-old bay Holsteiner gelding owned by Johannie Légaré.
Vince’s winning mount, California, has been in the barn for several years and is also shown by his owner, Victoria McDonald, as well as her daughter, Meghan McDonald.
“He’s fantastic,” said Vince of her winning mount, known simply as “Cal” around the barn. “He’s been with us five or six years now. I love him, he’s beautiful, and he’s won in Wellington, which is basically the Olympics for hunters. He’s very good and he’s very, very special. You always have to take his personality and preferences into account. We do the shows he likes to do and when he’s on, he’s phenomenal.”
In recognition of her win, Vince was presented with the Gladys Adam Memorial Trophy, presented by the Oswald family. Established in 2004, the trophy commemorates the life of legendary horsewoman and Jump Canada Hall of Fame member, Gladys Adam. It was the second time that Vince has hoisted the trophy, having previously won it with Magic Show in 2015.
Vince has excelled in all three rings – hunter, jumper, and equitation – during her illustrious career. A back-to-back Canadian Show Jumping Champion with Catch 22, Vince operates her training business, Linden Ridge, from her family’s farm alongside her younger sister, Courtney Vince, who has also represented the Canadian Show Jumping Team in international competition.
“I’m really fortunate to have the group of customers that we have here and the support team,” said Ainsley Vince, who brought nine horses to Wesley Clover Parks for the two-week RBC Ottawa Summer Tournaments. “Courtney is a huge help with strategy and warm-up, and we have such a nice and supportive farm family. We love our home base – it’s warm and friendly – and we love Ottawa! We want to be here every year. It’s a show that’s run from the perspective of the customer. I can’t even tell you how rare that is these days.”
Vince and the Linden Ridge team will continue competing throughout the RBC Ottawa Summer Tournament II running July 9 to 13, highlighted by the $40,000 Cooper Equipment Rentals Grand Prix at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 12.
Following the RBC Ottawa Summer Tournament II, international show jumping competition returns to Wesley Clover Parks from August 14-17 with the RBC Ottawa International, featuring CSI5* and CSI2* divisions sanctioned by the FEI. Attracting some of the highest-ranked show jumping athletes in the world to the Nation’s Capital, the RBC Ottawa International will feature the US $340,000 CSI5* RBC Grand Prix on Saturday, August 16.
