Equestrian Canada (EC) is pleased to officially announce the talented young athletes that will represent Canada at the 2023 FEI North American Youth Championships (NAYC) in Traverse City, MI from Aug. 8-13, 2023.
NAYC brings together top dressage and jumping athletes aged 12 to 25 years from Canada, the United States and Mexico for the chance to compete for team and individual medals. For the third consecutive year, the Championships will be held at the Great Lakes Equestrian Festival at Flintfields Horse Park.
The Championship allows youth to compete against their peers in a format similar to that of the Olympic games and other international senior championships. Competition will include childrens (12-14), pre-juniors (14-16), juniors (14-18), young riders (16-21), and U25 (16-25) divisions.
Canada will be represented at NAYC 2023 by the following athletes:
The Canadian Dressage team will be supported by travelling Chef d’Equipe – Denielle Gallagher-Legriffon and non-travelling Chef d’Equipe – Courtenay Fraser
“We have some seasoned team members as well as new ones, I’m very happy to include a U25 team this year” said Gallagher-Legriffon. She added, “NAYC is an amazing opportunity for our youth to gain experience on an international level and Canada has incredible talented, humble and hard-working youth – this is their chance to be recognized with a well-deserved opportunity to represent their country, I can’t wait to get started!”
The Canadian Show Jumping team will be supported by Chef d’Équipe, Dayton Gorsline, and Team Assistant Lindsey Blakely
Canada is heading into NAYC 2023 after a strong showing last year where the team captured five medals (two gold, two silver and one bronze) and had many top eight finishes in individual and team competition.
“Individually, we are very capable of medals,” said Gorsline. “We would like to qualify for the championships in Europe again this year. We’re also looking forward to the young riders. I think we have two very strong teams competing,” he added.
