In recent weeks you could read on Hippomundo how the World Championships of 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 went and what happened with the Champions. This week we dive into the archives and take a closer look at the 2014 World Championships.
Five-year-olds
There were 44 participants that managed to qualify for the final of the five-year-old horses in 2014. After a 13-man jump-off, the gold went to the Netherlands thanks to Maikel van Mierlo and his Harley VDL son Earley. It was the start of something exceptional, because a year later the duo would match this performance again in the final for 6-year-olds. In 2016, Earley was sold to HH Farm and became known as HH Earley. He was seen for a while under the saddle of Quentin Judge up to 1m45 level, but in 2017 and 2018 Marlon Modolo Zanotelli and Charlotte Bettendorf were also in the saddle of the brown gelding. After more than a year and a half, he appeared back on the international stage in Wellington in January 2020 with Joanna Wolffer.
The silver went to Ard Ginger Pop, a daughter of Luidam ridden by Marlon Zanotelli’s current wife Angelica Augustsson. Also later on, the chestnut mare stayed with the Zanotelli family. In 2015, she managed once again to reach the final. This time she finished 11th in the final for 6-year-old horses with Marlon. In 2016 she was sold and disappeared from the international radar for a while, until she competed in Miami about a year ago under the saddle of Alison Robitaille. They could already be seen at 1m60 level.
In 2014 Marlon himself took 3rd place in the final for 5-year-olds. He did this with the grey gelding Cool Clarimo, a son of Clarimo ASK who was then owned by Ashford Farm. He was also seen the following year under the saddle of both Angelica Augustsson and Marlon Zanotelli and is currently jumping at 1m45 level with the Norwegian rider Rose Skei.

Six-year-olds
For the final of the six-year-olds, 42 combinations managed to qualify in 2014. It was home rider Christian Ahlmann who grabbed the world title with the grey gelding Hui Buh,who is still at the stable of Ahlmann, but in recent years he mainly competed with stable rider Angelique Rüsen and this up to 1m45 level.
Austrian rider Carola Wegener took home the silver medal with Caspar Blue. This son of Chacco Blue was also seen under the saddle of Wegener in the following years and jumped some CSI2* Grand Prix in 2017. After almost 2 years of absence on the international stage, he appeared in Verden last year under the saddle of Andreas Wegener.
The bronze went to the Netherlands thanks to Patrick Lemmen and Dacantos. This son of Up to Date was subsequently seen under the saddle of Monique Van Den Broek and also grew into a two-star Grand Prix horse before moving to the United States in 2017. There he already jumped with Cara Raether Carey and Emma Marlowe, but nowadays we see him jumping with the Irishman Lorcan Gallagher at 1m50 level.

Seven-year-olds
Finally, in the seven-year-olds, 38 combinations managed to secure a place for the final, but only one of them managed to jump double clear and thus take home the world title! The honor went to the Irishman Bertram Allen with Barnike, a daughter of Baldwin B who was bred by the Bles brothers in the Netherlands. Baldwin B was also seen under the saddle of Allen the following year, before his compatriot Alex Duffy took over the reins in 2016. They jumped up to 1m50 level. At the beginning of this year we saw the brown mare at work in Oliva under the saddle of the German rider Laureen Budde, who was also in the saddle of Baldwin B in early 2015.
In addition to the gold medal for 6-year-olds, Christian Ahlmann also won the silver medal for 7-year-olds in 2014. He did this with Casuality Z,who was bred by Ton Vullers and owned by Studfarm Zangersheide. As an 8-year-old she jumped several times at 1m50 level with Ahlmann, but later that year Judy Ann Melchior took place in the saddle of the gray mare. They were also active at 1m50 level. In April 2018, she last appeared in the competition ring under the saddle of Angelique Rüsen.
Swede Niklas Arvidsson seized the bronze medal for the 7-year-old horses in 2014. He did this with the Swedish approved stallion Hasard, a son of Heartbeat. Even after the World Cup, Hasard stayed with Arvidsson and together they grew to 1m50 level. After a short passage under former European Champion Peder Fredricson in 2017, he returned to Arvidsson in the stable, but he has not appeared in the competition ring since February 2019, when he won 2 of the 3 classes in a two-star competition in Kronenberg in the Netherlands.
