The Longines Global Champions Tour event that was scheduled to be held in the Old Port of Montreal on September 19-22, 2019, has been cancelled. In a Facebook post the non-profit organization Le Tour des Champions de Montréal (TCM) stated they were withdrawing from the event, claiming the reason was, “The winning conditions to ensure the success of the Global Champions Tour Montreal could not be met in a timely basis.” It is not clear what “winning conditions” were not able to be met. Ticket refunds will be processed automatically back to the original credit/debit cards in the next few days.
Montreal had been one of two new venues that were added to the LGCT roster this year, with the other one scheduled in New York City from September 27-29. “I am delighted to welcome Montreal to our circuit and to be staging a leg of the series in Canada,” Tops had remarked last year when the city given the nod. “We have fantastic destinations around the world and it is important to continue to bring show jumping to new fans in major cities and to new audiences.”
It has been a tough year for top-level show jumping in Quebec’s largest city. A CSI4* scheduled for Oct. 2-6, 2019 in Montreal has also been removed from the FEI calendar. Organizer Roger Deslauriers could not be reached for comment as to the reason; an FEI spokesperson told Horse Sport that “the National Federation sent a request for cancellation of the CSI4* competition in February.”
