The Canadian Olympic Committee reports that its Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Julia Alleyne, examined Canada’s Eventing Team member Hawley Bennett-Awad today. Hawley’s condition has improved and it is anticipated that she will be discharged from the hospital within the next 24 hours. However she is not expected to travel home immediately.
“We are very relieved that Hawley is recovering well and is expected to be released from the hospital shortly,” stated Mike Gallagher, President of Equine Canada. “She is to be commended for her strength and courage, and we hope to see her back in fine form soon and competing once again for Canada.”
Hawley, 35, of Langley, BC, fell at fence three during the cross country competition yesterday riding Gin & Juice, a 12-year-old American Thoroughbred mare she co-owns with Linda Paine. She suffered a concussion and a stable sacral fracture and required hospitalization.
