As temperatures rise, so do the risks for both horses and riders. Over the next few weeks, the FEI is sharing essential tips on how to keep you and your horse cool, safe and competition-ready!
The FEI has launched a Beat the Heat campaign to help the national federations, FEI officials and event organizers protect horse and athlete welfare when organizing and officiating at FEI events in hot and humid conditions.
The campaign is being conducted on the FEI’s social media platforms (see below). It also includes a newly-published guide, a series of animated videos, as well as additional educational resources.
Guide
The Beat the Heat guide contains practical advice on the best ways to provide cool and comfortable conditions for horses and humans at FEI events organized in hot and humid climatic conditions. It covers best practices such as strategically placing cooling stations, ensuring ample water and ice supplies, providing sufficient shade, and improving stable ventilation. The guide emphasizes the importance of proactive planning, highlighting practical steps to assess and manage heat risks.
The document is intended for use mainly by NFs, FEI officials and event organizers, but it can also be beneficial to athletes, grooms, and staff competing and working during the hot months of the year as it contains tips on protection and recovery for the human body.
Videos
The FEI has produced a Beat the Heat animated series of eight videos which outline the impact of heat and humidity on both horses and humans and explain how they affect performance, training, food and daily routines. The videos provide useful recommendations on how to prepare for, travel to, and manage competition under hot and humid conditions and teach ways to recognise heat-related illness symptoms and emergency signs, and how to respond properly.
These videos are available on FEI Campus, the FEI’s e-learning and community platform, in a dedicated playlist. There is no need to log in to access the videos.
Social media
The Beat the Heat campaign will be conducted on social media over the coming five weeks. It has been designed as a prevention campaign for a wide equestrian audience.
