The field for the Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event presented by MARS Equestrian™ (K3DE) will be smaller by one following the first horse inspection, with 34 of the 35 horses presented to the ground jury moving on to the first phase of competition, the dressage. Under crystal clear blue skies, the competitors in the CCI5*-L put their best and most fashionable foot forward as they demonstrated their horses’ fitness to begin the competition.
The USA’s Jennie Brannigan’s mount Twilightslastgleam was first held and eventually not accepted by the ground jury of Christian Steiner (AUT), Peter Gray (CAN), Anne-Mette Binder (DEN), and Dr. Debbie Williamson (USA). Brannigan will still be competing on her other mount, FE Lifestyle.
Produced by Equestrian Events, Inc. (EEI), a non-profit, charitable organization that supports the development of equestrian sports by staging sporting events at the highest level, the Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event presented by MARS Equestrian features one of only seven annual 5* three-day events in the world. Known as “The Best Weekend All Year,” the event annually attracts nearly 90,000 spectators who also enjoy extensive shopping, a variety of hospitality experiences and a wide array of demonstrations. In addition to the traditional CCI5*-L, the event also features the Cosequin® Lexington 4* and the Kentucky International CSI5* presented by Hagyard Equine Medical Institute.
Dressage kicks off Thursday with the CCI4*-S in the morning, followed by the CCI5*-L in the afternoon. Notable names to watch on the first day of dressage include multiple world and Olympic champion Michael Jung (GER) with FischerChipmunk FRH, top-ranked American Boyd Martin with Fedarman B and New Zealand’s Tim Price with two of his three mounts, Jarillo and Happy Boy.
The eventing wasn’t the only thing to commence on Wednesday, with the show jumpers hoping to contend for the Kentucky International CSI5* presented by Hagyard Equine Medical Institute getting their horses in the ring for the $35,000 CSI5* 1.45m Two-Phase. While many competitors went in, jumped a few fences, and then put their hands up to retire, competition was still fierce for the top spots and prize money. Ireland’s Conor Swail took the win aboard My Lady Lavista with a clean time of 29.19 seconds. Hot on his heels were Venezuela’s Luis Fernando Larrazabal with Belle De Muze in second (0/0/29.48) and the USA’s Alex Matz with Cashew CR in third (0/0/29.88). The qualifier for Saturday’s class takes place Thursday evening.
