Canada to Host International Para-Dressage Competition May 2010

Ottawa, ON—Para-Equestrian Canada is pleased to announce that it will host an international Para-Dressage competition in the Greater Toronto Area from May 28–30, 2010.

The WindReach International Para-Dressage CPEDI3* event will act as an official qualifier for the 2010 World Equestrian Games, and as a result will draw athletes from around the world.

Riders from Australia, Singapore, Zimbabwe, Argentina, Bermuda and Venezuela have expressed interest in the event, and many other nationalities are expected to attend.

“This competition will increase Canada’s exposure to the sport by showcasing the world’s top para-dressage athletes” said Isabel Reinertson, Chair of Para-Equestrian Canada. “WindReach will truly be a first-class competition.”

The event takes its name from WindReach Farm, the 109-acre property that will host the event, located northeast of downtown Toronto in Ashburn, ON. The farm was the life-long dream of founder Sandy Mitchell, an equestrian enthusiast born with cerebral palsy, and is designed to cater specifically to individuals with disabilities.

“Everyone here at WindReach Farm is excited and looking forward to welcoming all the competitors, coaches, officials, volunteers and spectators for this most important competition,” said Mitchell.

“This is the perfect facility for such an event,” added Elizabeth Robinson, High Performance chair and Chef d’équipe for Para-Equestrian Canada. “Everything on the grounds was designed with accessibility in mind.”  WindReach Farm (formerly named Cedar Lynde Stables) was also host to the first Canadian Open Paralympic Qualifier in 2004. 

Para-Equestrian Canada will also host a variety of clinics at WindReach Farm on the days surrounding the competition with details to follow in the upcoming months.

The WindReach International Para-Dressage CPEDI3* will be the third FEI Para-Equestrian event held in North America.  Canada hosted the first North American international Para-Dressage competition in British Columbia in 2006, and the United States hosted another in Chicago this past year.
