Alexandra Duncan Prepares for FEI Young Rider World Cup

Ottawa, Ontario— Alexandra Duncan of West Vancouver, BC contested the CDY-CDJ Kreuth Dressurgala, held in Kreuth, GER from December 8 – 10, in preparation for the FEI Young Rider World Cup, which began on December 12 in Frankfurt, GER.

Riding Elektra, her 11-year-old Holsteiner mare, Duncan kicked off her first ever German competition in the FEI Junior Team class, where she scored 62.44% to tie for 21st place.

“I was really happy with my horse, especially since the arena was filled with giant Santas and nativity scenes. The entire arena was like a Christmas forest and Elektra took it all in stride,” commented Duncan.

Next up was the Individual class, where the duo made a significant improvement, placing tenth on a score of 65.08%. Duncan closed out the competition in the Kur, earning her highest score of the competition with 66.92% and seventh place.

“The quality of riding and the horse caliber at this competition was exceptional. Every single rider rode with military precision,” explained Duncan. “The main difference I felt here compared to competitions in North America was the sheer competitive nature of all the riders. Each one rode like they were going to win, with accurate tests given. I can sum up the overall experience in one word – wow!”

Duncan was identified as the Canadian representative for the World Cup based on her 2006 results at FEI competitions. She will be competing against the top 17 Young Riders from around the world, including Europe, South America, Africa and Asia. Riders will get a taste of truly international, world-class competition during the Final, where they will contest the FEI Young Rider Team, Prix St. Georges and Freestyle tests.

“Had I not done this competition, I doubt I would have been prepared to compete at the Young Rider World Cup,” said Duncan, who helped the Canada West Young Rider Dressage Team bring home the Gold Medal from the 2006 North American Junior/Young Riders’ Championships, held in Lexington, VA this past August. “On day one of the show I felt awed and intimidated, but I feel much more confident now that I have ridden with some of the best riders in Germany.”

Canada took part at the inaugural 2005 FEI Young Rider World Cup Final where Julie Watchorn, of Schomberg, ON, took third place in the consolation round aboard Quintesse.
