YoungHorseMay31.jpgPalgrave, ON – The first event of the 2010 Jump Canada Young Horse Series took place during the Caledon National Horse Show held May 19-23 at the Caledon Equestrian Park in Palgrave, ON.

KingRidge Stables dominated the Seven and Eight-Year-Old Division with Roberto Teran guiding Grand Finale 3E to victory. Bred in Canada by KingRidge Stables, Grand Finale 3E is by Jamestown and out of a Chin Chin mare. The eight-year-old bay Canadian Sport Horse mare jumped double clear and had the fastest time in the jump-off to secure the win.

Also jumping double clear, but not quite fast enough to catch Teran and Grand Finale 3E, was Lauren Patava and her mount Sly, owned by Bonaventure Farm. Sly is a seven-year-old bay Dutch Warmblood gelding by Lureusa and out of a mare by Goodtimes.

Taking home third place was Canada’s Beth Underhill aboard her own eight-year-old bay Dutch Warmblood gelding, Viggo. Also clear in both the first round and the jump-off, Viggo is by Quick Star and out of a Cantus mare.

In the Six-Year-Old Division, Erynn Ballard piloted Sera to double clear rounds to secure victory for owner and breeder Braeburn Farms of Ontario. A black Canadian Warmblood mare, Sera is by Escudo and out of a Lacros mare.

In second place was Christi McQuaker on Duvel, who also jumped double clear. Owned by Janette Morrison, Duvel is a chestnut Dutch Warmblood gelding by Ovidius and out of a Naruur mare.

Canadian Olympian Beth Underhill was the final challenger in the jump-off and posted yet another clear round, but her slower time placed her third riding Hoolie Who. Owned by Iron Horse Farms, Hoolie Who is a bay Dutch Warmblood mare by Quick Star and out of a Landgraf I mare. Interestingly, Hoolie Who is a half-sister to Underhill’s Seven and Eight-Year-Old Division entry, Viggo.

The Five-Year-Old Division was dominated by horses registered with the Canadian Sport Horse Association. First place went to Itty Bitty, owned and ridden by Kelly Soleau of Marlborough, CT. Itty Bitty, who was bred by Millar Brooke Farms of Perth, ON, is a Canadian Sport Horse mare by Mr. Itt and out of a Prospector’s Halo mare. Soleau rode Itty Bitty to victory with a jump-off time of 31.27 seconds, the fastest time by almost a full second.

Both second and third place went to rider Roberto Teran on two horses bred and owned by KingRidge Stables of King City, ON. Placing second was Just for Fun 3E, a bay Canadian Sport Horse mare by Double Diamond and out of Firefly 3E by Money Talks. The pair were also clear in the jump-off, but were not quite fast enough to catch Soleau and Itty Bitty. For third place, Teran rode Jetsetter 3E, another Canadian Sport Horse mare, to double clear rounds. Jetsetter 3E is by Polyfax and out of a Chin Chin mare.

The Four-Year-Old Division was also ruled by Canadian-bred horses, as first place went to Susan Parker’s Beam P, who was bred by Prima Warmbloods and ridden by Natasha Smith-Avery. Beam P, a Canadian-bred Dutch Warmblood gelding by Indoctro and out of an Emilion mare, jumped clear for the maximum 50 performance points and was awarded 38 out of a possible 50 points by the style judges for a total of 88 points.

Placing a close second was SLF Dr. Dax, ridden by Christi McQuaker and owned by South Lane Farm. SLF Dr. Dax also jumped clear for 50 points, and was awarded 30 points for his style. Bred in Canada, SLF Dr. Dax is a bay Hannoverian gelding by Dr. Pepper out of a Singular Joter mare.

Claiming third place was Bhaksar DasGupta riding Debut V, a thoroughbred/Clydesdale-cross mare owned by Jenny Lineker. Debut V had one rail down over the course to earn a performance score of 45 points, and was awarded 28 points by the style judge. Debut V was bred by Jim McKay of Shady Maple Farms, who has earned a reputation for producing cross-bred sport horses.

The purpose of the Jump Canada Young Horse Series is to encourage the development of young show jumping talent and to give Canadian breeders additional incentives to breed superior show jumping prospects. Competing on a level playing field, the horses are divided according to age and jump at a level suited to their development. This careful development allows the horses to gain valuable experience and advance to the higher levels of show jumping competition with confidence. The Jump Canada Young Horse Series also gives prospective buyers for the hunter and jumper markets an opportunity to view a large group of prospects in a competition setting.

The 2010 Jump Canada Young Horse Series is truly national in scope with competitions being held from coast to coast. The National Young Horse Finals will take place at the Canadian Show Jumping Tournament held from September 22-26 in Palgrave, ON.
