Have you ‘herd’ the good news? Spruce Meadows Name the Foal, presented by TELUS, is back with a trio of delight-foal babes in need of a name.

The popular contest, which garnered more than 60,000 entries last year, gives horse lovers from the across the country the chance to name these little ones – and win some big prizes.

From now until August 2, 2024, entrants can visit namethefoal.sprucemeadows.com to offer up their best suggestions for this year’s crop, featuring two cute colts and a fabulous filly.

The only guideline is that the first letter of each foal’s name must begin with the same first letter as that of their father’s, or sire’s, as is equine tradition.

A committee will select winning names, with the victors receiving tickets to this year’s world-class ‘Masters’ tournament, including airfare and accommodation, plus a prize pack, courtesy of Spruce Meadows and TELUS.

In the meantime, check the Spruce Meadows social media for regular updates on the youngsters.

The foals will also be making visits to the International Ring during upcoming Spruce Meadows show jumping tournaments, the National, presented by Rolex (June 12-16), and the North American (July 3-7).

Now, let’s meet this year’s foals!

Foal #1 – ‘M’ (above left)

Foal #1 is full of fun, and always excited to have a visitor. This bouncing bay colt is friendly, sweet, and inquisitive. With a diamond-shaped facial marking and a high-rolling father called Million Dollar, this little chap is surely destined for stardom. When he’s not foal-ing around, Foal #1 likes to snuggle up with his mom, Memphis. Interesting fact about Foal #1 is that he was born to a surrogate. His egg was donated by the lovely Madam Niki.

Foal # 2 – ‘G’ (above centre)

A will-foal, confident personality means Foal #2 can be a little unruly. But what he lacks in obedience, he makes up for in horse-sense, with handlers describing him as ‘intelligent’ and a ‘quick learner’. With an arrow-shaped stripe along the bridge of his nose, it’s no wonder Foal #2 has a bit of a wild streak. He prefers the company of mom Fachenda to human visitors, but with all the attention he gets, it’s doubtful Foal #2 will be standoffish furlong. His sire’s name is Grandorado.

Foal #3 – ‘U’ (above right)

Foal #3 is a beauti-foal filly who is curious but cautious. She stands her ground when people come around, making sure no one is going to stirrup any trouble. The youngest of our three foals, this little gal doesn’t like to venture too far from mom Revival. With a sweet rose-petal shaped marking on her forehead, we doubt it will be long before Foal #3 develops a colt-following. With 5* show jumper Ut Majeur de Brecey for a dad, Foal #3 has a bright future ahead.

“The 2024 Spruce Meadow Summer Series marks a 35 year partnership between TELUS and Spruce Meadows,” said Patrick Barron, Vice-president of Corporate Citizenship and Community Investment, TELUS. “As a company committed to supporting our local communities, we’re deeply proud of our collaboration with Spruce Meadows, a legacy in the Calgary community, who share in our values and commitment to give where we live. Building on the success of last year’s Spruce Meadows’ Name the Foal contest, presented by TELUS, we are excited to once again be part of the creativity and enthusiasm with a trio of foals to be named.”
